Swim
Comments: Started out like a rock star, then a stiff blow to my back after the first buoy threw me off a bit. I swallowed a sizeable amount of Lake Winnipesaukee's best, which created a bit of choking and started my nose running. What would you do differently?: Practice siting more, especially into the sun. I lost my way a bit over the last 200m Transition 1
Comments: Took my time here so I could focus a bit. Bike
Comments: Cycling has been hardest on my back since the injury, so I took this a bit easy. Even so, 3 hrs in the saddle proved very taxing on my poor little lumbar disks. By mile 40, staying in the aerobars was a no-go. But it's a beautiful course, and I got to see Bjorn Anderson rocket downhill faster than I drive, which was pretty cool. Transition 2
Comments: Tried to be quick without being rushed. Not too bad, considering my rack location. Run
Comments: This is where my body called it quits. I took the swim a bit easy, the bike quite easy, and I thought my back was ready for a little jog. Around mile 4, however, those little lumbar disks were talking to me, and what they were saying wasn't polite. I ran all of the first loop, at an ever declining pace. On loop 2, I started feeling quite sick in addition to being in pain, so I walked from mile 7 to mile 9. I ran most of the remaining course (I walked the major hill). Post race
Warm down: Layed on the ground and prayed for Advil. What limited your ability to perform faster: The herniated disk turned into quite a handicap, but I'm thrilled that I was able to complete the race. In addition to being sore most of the time, all those little muscles that keep one upright were working overtime. I think that is what finally caused me to crumble on the run. I herniated a disk a few weeks before the race, so just getting to the start (let alone the finish) was awesome, if a bit painful. Race morning I had a light breakfast of bagel and PB with some coffee before driving to Gunstock. Caught the shuttle to the race site, which was a bit longer than I planned. I was a little worried about having time to warm up, but the race was delayed by a car accident. My first time on a real school bus in many years!
With the race delay, I kept putting off my warm-up until it was too late. Oops.
