Subject: Where did my motivation go?
Has anybody seen it? Any ideas on how I can get it back? I havent had the will to train in the last week and have a marathon coming up in October. If you see it running or riding in your area let me know so I can get it back. Thanks

Perhaps it's hanging out with my motivation since I can't seems to find mine either.  I'm getting in the training, but having to really psych myself up first.  Case in point.... It's 1:20 on a beautiful afternoon, I've a bike ride to do and I'm sitting here on the computer.  What's wrong with me?!?!!?!

Quit thinking about it and looking to your feelings.  Just do it becuase that is what triathletes do.  Swim.  Run.  Bike.

You don't get up in the moring and look for motivation to brush your teeth or take a shower do you?  No.  You just do it because that is what you do.

So sometimes you look forward to a s/b/r and sometimes you don't.  Some times you can't wait to get out on the road and other times you'd rather roll over and go back to sleep.

You have a marathon in Oct.  Write out your plan and follow it come hail or high water.

Maybe they are having a three-some with mine. I finished my only "A" tri race of the season after injury knocked me out of my other one. I followed this last weekend with my biggest OWS of the season. After those 2 races I have had zero motivation. There is less than a month left to the season here and I am starting to think I need to look to next year.

I have the same problem, a lot of conflicts for me but here's what I do. I go online since that's usually where I am when I am not training, I read an interesting article about a person who was once a beginner and I see where they ended up and then I am pumped up to do a work out.

It works for me, hopefully it will for you too.

look at it this way:

I've been running for 6 years, biking for 1 1/2, and never once did i get out on a run or bike and wish i hadn't. EVERY SINGLE time I miss a workout, though, I wish i had gone out. sometimes you have to push your body out there, and your heart will come out of its hiding spot and come running after you.

Well said. I think I'll use this as a mantra on those tough to get started days (I have a number of those I use). Thanks.

Great quote.  Makes a lot of sense!      trying to be funny now:  I'm going to sit here on the couch and think about that.  haha

I think yours has Eloped with mine, lol  Or maybe just found her whilst out on the town, she's been missing for MONTHS!  And I have my first 10k on 27th....doh!  Like someone else said, its just a case of doing it, making it as part of your routine as brushing your teeth!  And they're right, as someone once told me:

"You never regret the things you do, only the things you don't".  How true that is, in all walks of life!

Good luck with finding your MO-VO!

I'm trying to remember the last time it took me 2 hours to brush my teeth or take a shower. If it took me that long, some days I probably would skip it.

You're missing the point.  It's a metaphor!  Training should become a lifestyle and not something that you have to find motivation for every day.

But even looking my comment as an analogy and not a metaphor, the OP is signed up for a marathon and should not be deciding to "skip it" as you suggest becuast it takes too long.  You can skip your shower and might stink all day but skip long/key workouts and you run the risk of DNF and/or injury.

I did not expect my comment to be taken seriously. It wasn't meant to be.

It'll happen, I think it's one of the cyclical things that is just very hard to control.  You go on vacation, and after coming back it's tough to get back into it.  You just finished your A race, and two weeks later you find yourself unwilling to get back into it.  You've had a few injuries and am now having trouble getting even half the training in you had been doing.  It's mid-winter and that 5k you need to run sounds like death right now, never mind that Sunday long run.

We've all had it, I'm sure the pro's have dealt with it...there are times when you just lose your way a bit and it's hard to get going.  I think part of it can be the physiological response to a long training season: you body has been through alot, you're a bit worn out--both mentally and physically--and you just feel despondant when thinking about training.

One suggestion: have both long and short term goals written out and easily accessible...multiple goals, at least one for each leg of the race, is even better.  Your short term goals should be an upcoming race, or a distance you'd like to cover, something like that.   How about your goal marathon time, that'd be a great short term goal.  Long term could be something a year out or more, maybe it's your ultimate goal (HIM, IM, Kona, whatever).  I've found that when I'm feeling tired, feeling unmotivated, coming off injury, whatever, that I get back on track just by reading through some goals I have set.

i'm pretty sure it's not just a three-some, cause mine is missing too...

but seriously, for me, sometimes its hard to just get off the couch--so having training partners is indispensable.  i love training, and i know i love training, but sometimes its hard to get started...knowing i have a training date with a friend gets me out the door and get going.  once i'm out there and started, i love it.  just got to get started.
