Pre-race routine:

Slept like a baby. I don't remember as a complete sleep the night before a race. Woke up five minutes before alarm (5:10) Usually I am very, very strict about what I eat the night before a race because of a very sensitive stomach, however the family wanted Noodles & Company and I ended up getting something with a little cream sauce (not good for someone lactose intolerant) So when I woke up, the stomach was doing gymnastics and I was cursing my decision. However, by the time I left for the race 'everything' had resolved itself.
Event warmup:

Parked a bit away from race for a quick get away post race, so I ran to/from registration for my warm up. Saw Pjgrande, which is always nice. No other Donkey sightings at that time.

Comments:

The theme for today was minimalism. It was quite chilly (upper 40's/50) at start. Thought about wearing arm warmers, long sleeve shirt, pants, parka, etc. Decided to tough it out and just go shorts and Donkey jersey. Last year I had my 6 slot fuel belt stocked to the gills ( and didn't use much) This year I had just one bottle of water, one bottle of Perpetuem and two gels. Thought about going without, but I like to decide my nutrition plan, not the race director.

Plan was to try and hit a 8:30 pace and stick with it as long as possible. Well after 1st mile mass mess (8:36) I found my pace and locked in. To my surprise, my confort zone was about in the 8:20-8:25 pace. So I just went with it. There was a guy just in front of me that was pacing a group at about 8:15/8:20. So stuck in just behind them (a few times in front of them) In the end, I think he was the only one in his group to stick to that pace. We jabbed it up a few times on the course (he did Ironman last year). He came up after and the race and congratulated me on my strong showing. Also saw Talltridad out there a few times. We took a moment to appreciate the 'scenery.' Beautiful course in many ways.

The norm for me is for the wheels to start falling off at about mile 10 on these things. That is aided on this course with some rollers coming in toward the end. I decided that wasn't happening today. I gave myself a mantra and kept repeating it: "The wheels are not coming off. The wheels are still on." My splits starting at mile 10 were 8:24, 8:25,8:33, 8:22, 8:09 (last 10th to finish) I had done it. The wheels had not come off and I finshed strong!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. In fact I want to figure out what I'm doing and apply it to my bike. Previous 1/2 mary PR was 1:55:33. My result at this race last (which was a PR at time) 1:58:37.
Post race
Warm down:

walked and talked. Great seeing Pam, Pete, Lisa and Ross. Saw Ben as he cheered me on (he finished about a week before me.) It was a regular PR fest out there.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Genetics

Event comments:

Great weather, great friends, great PR. Does it really get any better than this?

Those wheels definitely did not come off... those big wheels kept on turning-- hey, someone should write a song about that!

Awesome run, dude. For once, you have to be very, very happy with your performance!
