No kidding:

"Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races is mandatory and marking an athlete’s age group on the calf is part of that process. Athletes competing in our events rely on age group markings on calves to identify their competition. Ironman has been receiving an increasing number of complaints that compression socks and calf guards hide age group identification. At Hawaii 70.3 in June, Ironman experimented with eliminating age group calf markings on all athletes. This attempt at resolving the issue was met by even more complaints by the athletes. Therefore, beginning with the 2009 Ford Ironman World Championship, garments that cover age group calf markings will not be permitted. Ironman’s goal is to design (and my job is to enforce) rules that provide the most level playing field possible.

Sincerely, Jimmy Riccitello"

It's for real folks, no racing with compression socks or calf sleeves at WTC IM events.

Bryan, you need to get out more (or, I guess, stay inside more and read the 'net)

I suppose you can get one of those bejewlers and put your age right on the sock

Shucks, now what are the people who want to blame everything but training for their bad results and cramps gonna do??!!

Guess they'll just have to race like everyone has done for the last 30 years in the sport ........

Seems that you could just put some paper, put on the marking  and 2 straps to solve the problem.  Not that I wear them...

I wear them.....love them! I do not see why you cannot just mark the back of the calf guard.........seems perfectly simple to me.

Wonder how many people finish with legible calf numbers.  Couple apps of sunscreen after the number and it's long gone.  (But maybe the top dogs aren't using sunscreen).

In my last race, after the wetsuits came off in T1, only about 10% of the calf #s were still legible. I was annoyed until I looked at my very own calf after the race, and the number was completely gone.

"Ironman’s goal is to design (and my job is to enforce) rules that provide the most level playing field possible."

But they're fine with speedsuits during supposedly non-wetsuit swims like Kona. That makes perfect sense.

In an official statement, the World Triathlon Corporation announced it has decided not to ban compression socks in the upcoming Ironman World Championship.

In response to athlete feedback, World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) has retracted its ban on garments that cover the calves at this year’s Ford Ironman World Championship, taking place on October 10, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  Because the age of athletes wearing these garments is not visible, Ironman will eliminate marking athletes’ ages on calves in Kona to ensure fairness among the field.  The tradition of body marking of bib numbers on athletes’ arms will remain in place.  WTC will continue reviewing this issue and evaluating ways to display ages of participating athletes.

Wah, wah, wah.

WTC caves under pressure after showing some backbone.

Oh well, hopefully they'll be gone before LP next year.

(Not because they actually give any performance gain but because I think they are stupid during a race ...... UNLESS you have a real legitmate medical reason and then you would be able to get an exception anyway).

Glad they reversed the ban. I've run 14 marathons, not including an IM, and wore compression socks in exactly one of my events. Did it help with time etc? No, did it help prevent in race fatigue and post race soreness in my calves. Without a shadow of a doubt.

The option to wear them should be there. The swim has the wetsuit and the speedskin or whatever those are called, the bike has Aero Helmets, Carbon wheels etc.. The run to this point has had no 'assistance'.. though that's really not what it is.. but my point is, if the other events can have their advantages, the run should be able to as well.

I like the idea of not hiding the age, but there should be another option to display age. Even if compression sock makers are forced to come up with that new way.. over their socks, on the socks.. wherever.

What backbone? Regrardless how you may feel about them, banning them was the waste of time and made WTC just look silly....like the socks make us look! It was a dumb ruling and I'm glad they have seen the error of the call. Their reasoning was asinine and that's being kind.

Nah ... the real story is that they caved to the equipment manufacturers.

Not that they don't look damn sexah on some but I suspect that in 5 years or so we are all going to look back and laugh that about wearing them ... they will be the triathlon equivalent of Mebers Only jackets from the '80's.

Right arm and left leg have bib #s, might as well just do left arm & right leg with ages...  If you're passing someone you can just look to your right and be like "sweet! they're in my AG"... if anyone is passing you, you should have be trying to go faster anyway
