Subject: Newbie Bike Question
Hey everyone! Brand new here and just started training for my first sprint triathlon which I will do next spring. However, I am looking for a road bike, I have a mountain bike, and came across a Bianchi 16 speed bike for sale on craigslist for $100. Is this a good deal and a good bike for a beginner? Thanks!!

Welcome to BT!

Without inspecting the bike there is no way to tell if that's a deal or robbery.

A mountain bike will get you from T1 - T2 in a sprint... but it's not ideal. Still, neither is an old steel bike that is falling apart. Check out the Bianchi, see if it's in working order (if it's local see if you can take it to a bike shop and get it looked over, or get a bike savvy friend to go with you to look at it.) It's not a good deal if it's $100 bike that needs $200 worth of work to get it in riding order.

Off the limited info, I'd probably pass.

Good luck either way!

Thanks, I also was thinking just throwing on some more road suited tires onto my mountain bike. I am starting of with sprint-tris and most of the rides are 13 miles or so which I have done on this bike before. Will the road tires help out a lot?

Yes, the road tires will make a big difference. I would use your MTB for your first sprint. No need to spend money yet. You'll probably get hooked and want something better, but no need to dive in just yet.... remember to have fun your first time out and learn from your mistakes (we all make mistakes the first time around... forgetting to take the helmet off for the run.. going out too fast on the bike and being completely dead on the run, etc. etc. etc. etc.) This is part of getting to love the sport!
