I am wantign to purchase a set of aero wheels and do not want to break the bank. I have been looking at the easton ec90 aero and the neuvation 50mm wheelsets. Does anyone know anything about these; or can you recommend something else? Thanks in advance.

With the deal Neuvation has going on right now for the C50's ($320 rear $279 front tubulars) that's very tempting... they get good reviews.

I bought some used 404's for $500 a few months ago, enjoying them. If you know what to look for you can get some good deals on used stuff.

First (and most important) question then. What are you expecting out of a new set of wheels?

There are a ton of better (cheaper) ways to get faster on the bike. Honestly, a $2k set of wheels isn't going make any dramatic changes in your times.

Some questions I'd suggest everyone ask before they purchase some expensive "toys."

What mph do you average on the bike currently?
Have you got a proper fit.
Do you have a Road bike or Tri bike?
Do you have a coach?
How "competative" are you? Are you finishing your tri's on the podium?

Some slick wheels have a cool factor, and yes, they will help you squeeze out a few seconds, but so would an aero helmet for $150 instead of $1000+

i have been averaging 20 to 22 mph. I own a tri, have been fitted and already own a aero helmet. I am looking to upgrade some things on the bike now. I wanted to start with a wheelset, as that is what everyone suggests next to do. I will not spned 2k+ on a wheelset. I will however spend around 1k.

Left field here. You look pretty big in your pic. All that muscle is heavy for cycling.

Lots of used wheels on eBay. HED's, Zipp's, whatever. Know what you want and the price you're willing to pay and be patient. Lots of past threads on the topic recommended a HED3 3-spoke front and a disc rear. Be warned though, none of it is a magic bullet that will get you multiple mph's.

It was really just a left field observation. I don't know if that's too heavy or not. I just know that most elite endurance athletes don't have large muscle mass.

Plus I have no idea about race wheels.

For the money, if I wanted a "new" set of wheels, those neuvations would probably get my vote, it's hard to find a NEW set of carbon wheels for around $600... from any company.

Used, the choices are pretty limitless. A good set of lightly used wheels + a wheelbuilder disc cover could go a long way in terms of value.

As far as the size thing goes... I started tri's at 5'10" / 205lbs (powerlifter) and I didn't have any problems... that said, At 151lbs I feel a lot (like 50lbs) lighter on the bike.

Ebay. You can get a set of used 808s or 404s for around $1000 (or even less), if you are dilligent.

You could also go aero front--808 or such--(also off ebay)--and then a wheel cover.

If you were to only get one aero wheel, would it be front or rear?
