We vacationed in that area a few weeks ago. Would have loved to have seen that. And there's still the bay side and pond beaches at which to swim.

During the second week of August, my family, my brothers family (2 little girls) and my dad were all swimming off the shore of Monomoy Island. I was actually swimming around the water by the boat looking for seals to play with. My kids are 4 and 6 and my neices are 2 and 5.

This is really scary. Talk about hitting close to home.

I love how the article says that the sightings might get people to see sharks in a new light...somehow, I'm thinking that's not going to be the case...

Thankfully, the Atlantic is too freaking cold to want to swim there in September...

I'm doing a tri in Hyannis THIS weekend.  Luckily, its 20 miles away from the sightings.

not to hijack, but is the Atlantic really too cold to swim in September? Further south, around Long Island, Rockaway and the Jersey Shore I've always found the water to be fine until early October...

September is a BEAUTIFUL on Cape Cod. The water is still warm (typically), the tourists have mostly returned home, but most of the attractions are still up and running. The Hyannis Sprint 2 was my first tri with OWS and I swallowed so much sea water that I couldn't hydrate on the bike. I felt like AZZ.

Depends on what part of the cape.  Chatham to Province Town is always cold (North Atlantic stream)  The sound side, and South Beach on Martha's Vineyard are great through September (Gulf Stream)  The bay side is also warmer.

I've gone swimming (comfortably) until mid October on South Beach and on the sound

Great Whites will swim hundreds of miles in a day if they detect prey...

20 miles is probably 400m in shark world...

I probably should've used the sarcastic font - I know 20 miles is nothing for a shark - I'm hoping that the seal population around monomoy is enough to keep them from venturing too far, like to a place w/ 850 splashing swimmers in wetsuits.  I'm also hoping a couple volunteers will be looking out to the ocean and not just the swimmers.

Hopefully, if anything is seen, it will be "just a school of bluefish"

Pffftt. I wouldn't worry about sharks. I am pretty sure the chance of gettting killed by a great white in Cape Cod is still less than 1 in 3.

Here are some in my neck of the woods (coastal NC). Not great whites, but more of 'em, so we still rank.

Looks like spinners. They head thru here (SE Florida) in January and ruin my OWS for a month.

Sharks are attracted to the smell of blood in the water from murdered call girls/staffers ........... even if they are inside cars. Sealed

Well, I grew up sailing around there (out of Hyannis, specifically) and rumor was that if Glide was out on the water, you'd better be on shore.

(Glide is/was the Kennedy sailing vessel and was not skippered particularly well.)

Perhaps the Kennedy's were too busy tossing a football back and forth to watch where the boat was going. What are the chances an activity like that would end poorly?

Did you see this article?  I'd be a little concerned about that Hyannis tri this weekend - these sharks are on the hunt!

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/09/10/tagging_along_on_shark_hunt_in_chatham/

I like the ad at the end of the article, too.  Just in case you do get eaten I guess.

(I don't know why I keep reading these articles, I'm petrified of sharks even though I know it is a stupid fear.)
