Subject: Anyone doing the Devil's lake Tri?
I posted a week or two ago - this will be my first tri...I've been increasing my quad and hammy strength training (as well as doing hill sprints on the treadmill and bike at the gym), which I'm seriously hoping will help me on the hills!

Anyone else doing this tri?

Any hints on marking my area during transition?

TIA!

I am thinking about it.  I am guessing it must be a pretty hilly course.  Anyone else have any experience with this event?

Check the race reports for the last few years and you'll get some details.

It's a great course and has been my last tri of the season for the last 2 years, but unfortunately I'll be missing it this year. It's fairly hilly, but it feels even worse because it starts with an uphill section on Hwy DL that's close to a mile long. There's also a hill that you have to go down just before the turnaround so that you lose all momentum before you have to go back up it.

However, there is a nice 2-3 mile downhill section, I think around mile 10-12 or so where you can pick up a lot of speed.

The swim is fairly short and the run is through the campgrounds (3 miles, not quite 5K).

Marking your transition spot?  If you don't want to use the balloon method, get there early to get close to the aisle.  There are also a couple of trees in transition...those are nice to key off, but remember which tree (last year I didn't remember in both Ts).   At one tri this year someone brought blue tape and taped an arrow shape onto the ground to mark their aisle.  Very nice since it was my aisle too!

I'm doing this one for my 3rd year in a row.  It's a fun course.  On the bike, you start with a flat .6mi to leave the park.  After that, as another poster said, the first hill is a doozy and is about 1.1mi long.  At about mile 5 you'll start downhill to the turnaround, this is a nice place to get your legs back for the 3/4 mi climb back up Tower.  It's a slow climb back up, but not like the first hill.  On Newman Rd at about 9.5mi you'll enjoy an approx 1.8mi downhill (w/out pedaling, I've cruised down at 38mph).  Watch for small rocks on the shady parts of Newman on the downhill!  Old Lake Rd is a bit deceiving, it looks kinda flat, but it's definitely a slooooow climb for 1.5mi.  Remember that the big hill into the park is just after this - plan accordingly.  The big hill is short and steep, it's amazing how it can get even more steep the last 150 ft or so.  Spin your legs once on the drive in the park to get ready for the run.

Hope to see you all there!

I'm doing it!  I biked the course earlier and it is tough.  This will be my first tri, so I'm getting pretty nervous!

Nervousness is understandable.  I was a couple years ago when this was my first tri (and I didn't even ride the course beforehand).  But, as the day got closer, my goal turned from "just finishing" to "just have fun."  I didn't care about a finishing time, so by taper time I just had to accept that I could do no more prep and was out for a fun swim, bike and run.  Hopefully by, and on, race day you'll have perma-grin!

Good luck!

I certainly hope so! Right now I want to finish upright, on my own power, and not dying! Smile

Okay, so it's been awhile and I hate to bump this thread, but I'd like to know how PTG1002 and Njacobs24 did in their first triathlons.  I hadn't seen any race reports...or I missed them.

Also amykmo, who's not on this thread, this was her 2nd.

So, how'd you do and how'd you like it?
