Subject: Why you should learn to swim without a nose clip...
My first oly was today. 100 yds from the start, I got a gentle kick that was enough to dislodge a goggle and swipe my nose clip off my nose. Poof. I spent the next 15 minutes panicking and figuring out how to breathe without it. Managed to salvage an OK result, but lost easily 5 min on the swim--maybe more--with the freaking out/stopping as I re-learned swimming in a huge pack. Not pleasant at all.

I'll be training without a nose clip this winter and weaning myself off the thing. That was so not fun.

hey i finished today too, but lack of training killed me on the swim... lets just say i had more problems than a nose clip.  but cheers to finishing, i should have probably began with a sprint.   next season.

I have never used one........have always exhaled in the water through my nose and inhaled with my mouth. I think I would panic if I was to wear a nose clip!!

Congrats to both of you on your Olys!

That's a bummer! I've never used one but my goggles fogged up today and that kinda sucked. I wanted to stop and wipe them out but I have contacts so just forged ahead. And the freezing cold water sucked. And the fact that I can hardly swim kinda sucked too! I've thought of getting one though to try to learn flip turns.

Since inhale/exhale is being discussed, I do both through my mouth.  Never had an issue with water up my nose or anything that would require a nose clip.  In OWS I never have an issue with water up my nose, It's only with flip that I have issues.  Not sure why a nose clip would be needed in an OWS... do other people have issues with something I don't realize? (honest question... no sarc font there... I really would like to understand in case a friend asks me one day)

Maybe it has to do with my massive schnozz, but I always had problems with water up my nose, etc. in the pool, especially during flip turns. Same is/was true to a certain extent in OWS, but I eventually settled into a rhythm. I think it was just that I was used to a certain way of breathing, and I wish I hadn't had to re-learn breathing in the washing machine of my first-ever Oly....

There must be some anatomic component to the whole thing, but I'm sure a lot of it is just my inexperience with doing anything else. As I said already, I'll be weaning off the nose clip this winter.

I have sinus issues which is why I wear one (It could be bad form too, and I'm willing to accept that possibility) but I have always had issues w/ water up/in my nose while swimming laps. I actually wear a free dive mask that has a full face skirt, which is more comfortable than a nose clip and still allows me to exhale through my nose.  Every so often, I do try and practice w/ regular swim goggles.  But at some point, while doing freestyle, I'll turn my head to breathe, and I will get water in my nose (could be my big schnoz too).  then when I turn back to the water, before  I can exhale, water drips down and I start to hack.  Now it's not as bad when it happens in OWS, but the chlorine is a killer to my sinuses.  Either way, I have to stop, hack, and it ruins my rhythm.

So I will wear it during the race b/c I dont want to hack in the middle of the pack, panic, have to stop or need for assistance.  Now, I can deal if my mask gets kicked off or fogs, like it did to me in my spring race, I just have to use more side and breast stroke, or face out of the water freestyle so I lessen my chances for hacking (ie swim even slower).  But I'd rather start out wearing something that makes me more comfortable during the swim and deal if I have to.  Less anxiety in OWS is a good thing

My wife uses one because she has a deviated septum or something like that.  She needs to use a clip or she cannot swim with her head in the water (so far).

Key thing is you made it Pete.  Great job and way to finish!

I don't use a nose clip either... I use a full mask.  I have terrible sinuses and will spend 1/2 hour the next morning sneezing and blowing my nose if I get any water in my nose from swimming.

Outside of having any sinus issues, I agree; learn to swim with-out nose clips.

Thanks--looking back, it was getting my s**t together in the first 15 minutes of the swim and staying focused that saved the race for me.

Overcoming myself on this swim ended up being the big victory of the day.

I did break my nose way back when and got operated on... I wonder if that has something to do with it.

I wear a nose clip for OWS due to sinus/congestion issues.  Without it about 6 hours after the swim I start to sneeze and my nose gets runny.  Both sinuses would get completely blocked making sleeping that night difficult.  Usually goes away the next day.  I do have a nasal spray that I use at first indication of symptoms that helps on those occasions when I forget my nose clip.

I have no issues swimming in the pool.  So I only wear the nose lip on OWS.  No problems going back and forth, with.without nose clip for me.

I've broken my nose countless times and began swimming with one years ago.  I got dependent on it and had issues when I did not have it.

About 2 years ago I decided to break the addiction and just started swimming w/o it.  I'd say within a week I had broken the dependency.  Now I'm not sure I could wear one.

I have never swum with a nose clip, but always wondered how people did. To me, it would be like trying to run with a nose clip.

And, yeah, I get water up my nose. I just blow it out.

And, yeah, I get an allergic reaction to the pool water (chlorine...I'm fine in salt water pools and almost all open water) that can send my sinuses into a frenzy. If I am good about using a saline wash after swimming (or neti pot) and taking a shower, it significantly diminshes the allergic reaction.

That being said, my nose is straight, never been broken, etc. I imagine certain complications, like a deviated septum, might make it impossible to keep water out of your nose. However, if there are no issues like that then I think a nose clip is probably a crutch that ought to be avoided, if possible.

Of course, I never swam with goggles, either, until I was an adult. (But now that I can wear contacts while swimming,  I no longer run into the wall .)

I use one and I like it. Out of 7 races I have only had it knocked off once. It did not slow me down really just made my nose burn a little with the water getting in there.
I just like having it and will continue to use it. But I do think you need to be able to swim without it just in case.

For me (and others with multiple nose breaks and deviations) it's hard to breath thru our noses anyway.  So adding the clip doesn't do anything.  Now I do exhale a little bit thru my nose but it's not like I was breathing thru it.  Regardless I like the fact that I ditched the clip..

To be honest I could probably run with a nose clip.  You learn to deal with your limitations.

When I first started practicing for the swim, I would crawl until I tired and then go to a combat swim stroke (similar to side strok).  When I would do that, I often got water up my nose so I always used a clip.  I later moved to nothing but crawl and one day had my nose clip come off in the pool.  I found that I didn't have the water in the nose problem doing the crawl and that I breathed much easier so I put them away.

I think that maybe it's a breathing issue if you require the nose clip in an OWS.  When doing a side stroke, I'm not as disciplined about blowing out under water and taking a breath quickly through my mouth because my head is out of the water a little further.  That's just speculation based on myself though.  I don't claim to be a great swimmer.  ;-)

Just to add some clarity, I don't mean to infer that a person who requires a nose clip has a breathing discipline issue.. I'm saying that perhaps there is something which may differentiate breathing between different people.

I have the same reaction, but it's from the chlorine, about 8 hrs after swimming.  I've started wearing a nose clip for drills, otherwise I use a nette pot right after the pool.

I use a nose clip in the pool because of bad allergies.  I have been on prednisone quite a few times because some water got up my nose and saline rinses/allergy medications didn't work.  (I have really, really bad allergies.)  When I OWS, I tend to wear my nose clip because I have been accustomed to wearing it; the whole, don't change things on race day idea.

In answer to the nose-clip question...I have never been a swimmer, never a lesson. I taught myself this summer with a little help from my friends...(add proper tune As a runner, I breathe in my  nose and out my mouth. As a swimmer I should breathe in my mouth and out my nose. Totally opposite. Add to that a water phobia and never having put my face in the water and it makes it nearly impossible to learn to swim for someone like me. I spent 2 weeks struggling, coughing up water that ran down the back of my throat and was ready to quit. Bring in $3.99 nose plugs. I am up to 500 yards consecutively now and 900 yards a workout. Better than quitting. I do my first tri in Oct. I hope to ditch the nose clips over the winter, but they worked me through a bad spot in my training.
