Total Time = 2h 47m 48s
Overall Rank = 1340/4980
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 206/459
Pre-race routine:

Crappy sleep the night before in noisy downtown DC. Woke up 4:45. Ate super-sized bagel with PB. Sipped super-sized gatorade all morning.
Event warmup:

Walked around transition. Full contact taekwondo in the swim pen. ;)
Swim
  • 32m 46s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have gone out a little harder, but I was nervous for my first OWS in a race setting.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

This was a top 5% performance. Much better than I thought I could do. Was surprised to see so many people running in bike shoes. Only about 10% had shoes already clipped in.
What would you do differently?:

NOT have my race belt already clipped. Think about glasses/helmet during run to bike.
Bike
  • 1h 13m 15s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Like the swim, probably "coulda-woulda-shoulda" pushed harder, but my lower back/iliac area was aching pretty bad. Rear wheel, spoke broke with 4 miles to go.
What would you do differently?:

Push through pain earlier, and then rest on last 2 miles.
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Frigging got lost in transition. Ducked down two aisles too early. Lost 20 seconds finding my spot.
What would you do differently?:

Go to center aisle where the row numbers were clearly marked, even if it was not the most direct route. Also, know what I am going to do with my glasses.
Run
  • 57m 28s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

I am a slow mother hubbard. Was frustrating watching people pass me in mass amounts, while I only passed the injured and sick (seriously).
What would you do differently?:

Don't get hurt, so I can do more speed work running.
Post race
Warm down:

Wandered around in a daze. Tried to choke down some chocolate muscle milk (Ewww!) Ate a veggie sandwich, water, powerade, got stretched out by a Physical Therapist (Thanks!)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injured achilles & knees kept me from training fast in the run, and limited my running of any kind significantly.

Event comments:

The race wasn't nearly as crowded as expected. They need to take charge of the swim pen a little better, as many racers were blocked from the start by the herd of racers who got into the chute too early (including me!)

I am happy to be on the 'right side' of MOP!

Congrats!

And this was one of those very rare instances where even I had my shoes clipped on the bike to go through transition.  It was simply way too long to run with shoes on through grass to get to the mount line.  Especially since I had just put on new cleats!

Congrats.  Great race report.

I wasnt a big fan of the Muscle Milk either, kind of reminded me of a 'diet' chocolate milk.  But it was easy to get to while in line for the transition area.
