Pre-race routine:

This was my first tri so I was really anxious. I got up at 3am to drive to the event. I wanted to be there by 6am. Ate a Peanut Butter/Honey sandwich and a bannana on the drive. Drank some coffee and water as well.
My 17 year old son came with me and was a big help on hauling my gear and getting me settled for the swim.
My goal for the race was under 3 hours.....
Event warmup:

I swam a little just to get used to the water temp.
Swim
  • 31m 40s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was fine. It was a bit hard to get into a steady stroke because of all the people. I took it a bit easy on the swim because I was worried about my pace and expending too much energy. In hindsight I should have swam harder. I live on a lake and most of my training has been ows, I wanted to get around 27m for the swim. And I was not tired at all coming out of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Swim Harder
Transition 1
  • 03m 42s
Comments:

Did it really take me that long?? I planned to wear socks but my feet were too wet to get them on. Dropped my gel pack or just forgot it completely.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice more. Never having done a tri, I wasn't sure exactly what to practice..
Bike
  • 1h 32m 49s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 16.87 mile/hr
Comments:

I was fairly happy with the bike. My goal was 17mph and I was close. I did get passed by a ton of people, while passing very few. I had purchased a road bike back in May after determining my mtn bike would not cut it. So I was a little depressed as I got passed by two mtn bikes.
I was planning to take my gel at the midpoint of the bike and of course I didn't have it. I think that had physical and physcological effects on me. I was starving and running out of energy.
What would you do differently?:

Train more on the bike. Next year 18mph average.
Transition 2
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

Again - it took me that long?? My son said he was tempted to come check on me because it was taking so long :)
I took my gel, had problems getting my socks on and getting my race belt on. Just a generally disorganized effort on my part.
What would you do differently?:

Practice and simplify my whole transition area.
Run
  • 1h 01m 41s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Oh boy...right out of the transition area is a fairly steep hill that demoralized me on the run. I just did not have much in the tank at this point. About 3 weeks ago after my first bike/run brick I realized I should have trained the run more. Needless to say, I knew my goal of <3 hours was in jeopardy but I kept plugging along. I did walk up some of the steeper hills.
What would you do differently?:

Train more on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

My brother and sister did the race, so we hung around a bit. I jumped in the water again and grabbed some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More bike/run training.

Event comments:

Overall, I had a blast. The race was well organized and the volunteers were very helpful. This sport is addicting and I will be doing another.

Great first tri!  This is not an easy course and you did fine.  Transitions just take time.  My Ts were just as slow and now they are respectable (after three seasons).    Good start to the tri hobby.  You well on your way.
