Teri competed
(along with me, my wife and 325 other people
) on the Disney Studios tri team yesterday. For her safety
(since she's a paparazzi magnet, obviously
), she had an assigned lifeguard on the swim, a cyclist who rode along with her, and the team coordinator
(who's a multiple IM finisher, fwiw
) ran the run course with her.
My wave was 25 minutes after hers...I passed her and the coordinator
(and a couple other Disney team members
) as they were heading in from the run turnaround
(4 mile run course
) and I was on my way out. Thought it might be a nice motivator for the run to catch them by the finish...just missed...crossed about a minute after them
(I went 1:42, she did about 2:05
).
Interesting after having J-Lo out there last year
(Teri crushed her time, btw, with relatively little training...some of it biking to the set of Desperate Housewives a couple days a week
), how much more of a crush of journalists and photographers there were around Teri. In part, I guess, it was because she was a bit more visible, taking part in Disney parts of the event...like the presentation of the $250,000 check from Disney to the event charity
(Childrens Hospital LA
)...Teri fundraised about $17,500 herself, I believe.
Some people find the celebrities a nuisance out there, but I think it's fun and they set a good example for the couch-potato public, IMO. Third year my wife and I have done the race and I've never had celebs distract from my racing.
A couple side notes...
--David Hasselhoff showed up to play "official starter"...didn't stick around to start all the waves...
--Several pros raced the Sunday sprint for no prize money. Macca showed up for a second year
(signed my wife's bib number and chatted with us a bit at the end of the day
)...and this time some pros who raced in the Saturday Oly
(where the money was
) came back on Sunday: Greg and Laura Bennett, Chris Lieto, Becky Lavelle
(did a relay team swim
). Great vibe out there this year.
