TAIL OF A STICK AND TWO LOOPS!

STICK - nice ride, enjoying conversation with various others. was relaxed and enjoying my new aero helmet!!! hitting the nutrition every 15 mins, gels about every hour, enduralytes every 1:15..........that was the plan.....

LOOP 1 - nutrition smooth......feeling great!!! the big hills hurt a bit, but was fine. hit the special needs about 3 mins ahead of plan, ate some combos, switched bottles and off i went!

LOOP 2 - oh oh, took off from special needs, turned right, hit that hill and then at the top my tummy said........dude, empty. ralph number 1!!! (nope, not got on shark bait, not sure how!).....rode along, still feeling ok, not good, but ok......half an hour later (two nutrition cycles) ralph number 2 (nope, again, none on shark bait!).......putzed along trying to recoup some feeling but couldnt.....about mile 65ish(?) couldnt use the big boy ring anymore, was too painful and didnt have any power at all...switched to little boy with a medium gear in back. hit the hills again, made them easier than loop one (the freakin support there is unbelievable!!!). after crossing that highway, the little boy ring/medium gear felt like crap so downshifted again to the easiest possible gear so basically none left at that point. just outside of verona decided to pull over and stretch some, so hopped off and went to stretch and immedialty peed.......note here wearing grey front panels on tri shorts tends to let everyone know that you are peeing, just sayin.......so back on 'bait i go and still couldnt muster any power at all. took the turn and about mile 99 started seeing stars. went down into aero at mile 100 and the next thing i knew i was over on the left hand side of the road, almost on the shoulder. came back over to the right side, pulled over, hopped off, sat down thinking i could just sit a bit and regroup. well next thing i knew some lady was shaking my shoulder asking if i was ok............choice time, lie and say yay im fine, just took a little nap is all and then get back on 'bait and finish the ride but being the way i was i wouldve probably put other riders in jeopardy and possibly take other people out if i were to crash.....or say no and get stuff taken care of. well, i said no, actually was more like.uuuuuuuuu......which in her language means no so got a ride in the ambulance, 1000 cc in an IV hookup, multiple blood pressure/pulse checks, an ekg and a very slow ride to the med tent where i weighed in at 138 pounds (friday registration i was 151..) had three gatorades while in there, a bottle of water and four cookies.
What would you do differently?:

not knowing exactly what went wrong i dont know what i would do differently. i do know tho that i feel like i will remember this years ironman a LOT more than in '08. why? you always hear people say that ironman isnt about race day, its about the days that lead up to it. well on friday once we arrived into town it was just a great atmosphere all around. at the banquet table just sitting there and looking all the way down to the other end and seeing all the donkai was fantastic!! on saturday i went down to lake geneva and watched a friend kick some azz at that triathlon came back into town and went to dindin with a whole slew of donkai again (and they made me drink three shots in honor of my 40th bday...one apple juice, one cranberry juice and one cola!! EEEAAAWWWsome guys, thank you very much!!!) after i took the DNF i decided that i wasnt going to be that guy who sulked and went back to the hotel room. hell, how could i with all the donkai/BTer's out there?? stayed until almost 1130 cheering them all on and having a great time (i was kind of fading in and out due to everything........) then on the way back to the hotel i found out that the PACKERS WON!!! so guess what? MIAMI, YOU OWE ME FIVE BUCKS OR ..........well you know what the or is, right??)

GREAT WEEKEND with some OUTSTANDING PEOPLE!!!! thank you all so much for the inspires, comments and phone calls about my well being....very much appreciated and if (*cough cough* WHEN i do my next ironman, the results WILL be different!!!)

What a tough bike....sorry your day ended early...hope you are okay both physically and mentally with the unexpected and disappointing outcome.

Glad you had folks near you to make sure you got help when you needed it.

Sounds eerily like my day at IM Canada on the bike...lack of power, vomiting and mentally being very off, I was fortunate to be able to recover and continue..not sure why...maybe the walking my bike helped. Question I struggle with and you may too why? what happened? How can I avoid it in the future?

So sorry that your day ended in the way it did, but so happy that you made the best of it by sticking around and cheering on others - that in my opinion, is a true Ironman, finish line or not.  Good to hear you're okay.

Now, are you registered for 2010???

Races will come and go, but your health stays with you. I'm sure your family and friends appreciate the fact that you didn't take any unnecessary chances.

Glad to know that you are recovering.  Did you register for next year?

I'm super proud of you dude.  You had a rough, terrible day but you handled it better than most.  Seeing your face after you came out of the med tent was just .. ugh!  I was so devastated for you.  It couldn't have been easy watching everyone else finish but I'm so glad you did (mainly because we got some quality verbal sparring in

First of all...I am SO VERY glad that you are ok...I cannot tell you how many times I said to my sister, "I haven't seen my friend yet, I'm really starting to get worried." Think I saw you on the bike (we were at mile 16/56, right before special needs) but I don't think you heard me...

Second of all...you handled yourself like a true Ironman...going back out there to cheer your fellow BT'ers and competitors, that is AWESOME!

Finally, ya, your Packers won, so I suppose I owe you one...maybe I'll have to make that trip up to Donkville to visit you guys so I can buy you that lunch I owe you...or was it a lap dance? JUST KIDDING!!!!

SOOO glad you are ok...get some rest and get better kid!

And by the way...I did Lake Geneva, and I was looking ALL OVER the place for you...I never saw you up there?

So happy that you are feeling better. You are a fine example to those of us who had some crappy races this summer. When I was down and feeling sorry for myself, it was you who slapped me back to reality with encouraging words. Then, on the biggest day of your race season, you again provide a great example of what this sport (and being a Donkey) is all about. You are truly EEEAAAWWWWSOME Dave.

Next Ironman, you are so gonna kick it's azz!!!!!

I'm just glad they found you! I mean, I'm surprised they could see you among the tall grass! JOKING! Really Davey I'm just glad you lived to fight another day. You were wise not to try to keep going -- an unconscious fall could've ended your day in a much worse way. Regroup and get back on the front lines, soldier! I'm sorry you didn't see me. Too bad for you.

I didn't hear of anything until sometime on my run, and it brought my spirits down.  When I saw you on the Capitol square with the other Donks, it lifted my spirits up!

I'm so sorry it didn't work out for you this year.  Your swim was a HUGE improvement - you better thank your coach and A LOT!

That's very scary that you didn't have a VERY serious accident, and it was the smartest thing you did, whether you were conscious enough about it or not, to just not continue.  Conditions were brutal out there, so who's to say what really affected what happened.

YOU ARE STILL AN IRON DONKEY, DAVEY!!!

EEEAAAWWW!!!!

looking at the positives here dave...  you had a stellar swim...!!!  that is certainly something to build off of for next time...  probably a wise move to call it when you did...  agree with the thought to live and fight another day...  it was definitely a hot one out there...  it was good to see you up and around and the finish line area... we had all heard that you had went down on the bike...  and were worried as to whether you were okay or not...

Hey DJ, sorry to hear you got sick.  Were you crushing the bike on the first loop, or you think it was just some lake water?  I thought for sure I was going to get sick after I took a big gulp of green at the first buoy.
Anyway, it was great to see you there cheering people on.  Congrats for remembering it's just a game we play to have fun - if you don't enjoy both the ups and downs we're probably doing something wrong.

Hopefully I'll get faster so I can run with you this winter!
