Total Time = 2h 58m 52s
Overall Rank = 2027/3933
Age Group = M 40 - 44
Age Group Rank = 305/459
Pre-race routine:

Racked bike Saturday, took swim practice Saturday
Race Day: up at 4; banana, oatmeal, coffee; bus to event
Event warmup:

20 sun salutations; lots of stretching, barefoot jogging, meditation
Swim
  • 32m 39s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

Typical crowding/jostling for 1st hundred meters or so, but then easily found plenty of open water; up river current very mild, typical crowding at turn buoys but very crowded for the last 50 meters leading into the exit ramp. Very pleased with my navigation. AMAZING VIEW from halfway point
What would you do differently?:

In retrospect I could have pushed a little harder -- gone faster through middle 1000 meters.
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

Taking especial care due to first time out on Olympic course. Better slow than sorry
What would you do differently?:

Move faster
Bike
  • 1h 19m 30s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Pleased with ride although probably could have upped the speed, but again, I intentionally held back to conserve energy given that I was unfamiliar with the course and less experienced at this length.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing particular
Transition 2
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

Did see curb and smashed back wheel into curb, knocking off a shoe -- had to stop and get it -- plus bike then kicked leg, leaving a nice long scrape. Got disoriented in the transition area and took a long while finding my spot.
What would you do differently?:

Be more careful and practice walk the bike in entry.
Run
  • 59m 10s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Right quadricep bound up at about mile 1; stopped to massage it out; Otherwise ok.
Post race
Warm down:

stretching, PB-J sandwich, 2 muscle milks, water, shade

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience at Olympic length.

Event comments:

OUTSTANDING course -- scenic, challenging.
OUTSTANDING organization

Wind: Little with gusts
Course: Y shaped, flat, mostly very good surface, long stretches of 1 lane only made for relatively crowded conditions with some short stretches of narrowing and crowding. Unfortunate number of riders not aware of or caring about rules -- saw blocking, passing on the right, drafting, slow riding in the middle of the lane -- probably aggravated by the numbers of riders, but also LOTS of very good, considerate, friendly behavior both from those zooming by as well as those whom I passed.

Great race!  It was my first Oly too and it was difficult to know how to pace yourself.  I was scared to death of dying on the run (which is my weakest leg).
