BTW I used the calc.  by my estimation or weight and time / pace.  I should be taking about 200-250 cal / hr.  400 seems very high.

also want to point out on my last training which was 45 min swim / 2 .5 hr bike, i only had gatorade and water and although i was little pooped by the end of the ride i managed to hold a steady 21 min ave on the bike.

that was on minimal breakfast.  banana and yogurt.  tomorrow I will do a much longer workout and plan on trying out some of the stuff here.  and report back.

i ordered HEED today from the site since I don't feel like going to every tri store in south florida.

Baowolf - 2009-09-16 8:57 AM My opinion is that that is way too few calories.  On my first HIM I did 650 calories and went boom on the run 1 mile from the finish and had to walk.  2nd HIM I did 1500 calories and finished strong.  I did Infinit 1100 ish on the bike and then 4 Gu on the run (5:45 ish HIM).  For an IM I did similar around total 3200 calories (12:16:xx).  A HIM is a different beast than an Oly.

So 300-350 calories per hour on the bike and 200 to 250 calories per hour on the run for HIM or longer races (well I include an open marathon in there also).

Most carb drinks are 100 cals, gels also. 300 cals an hour is easy to practice, I usually drink a 24 oz bottle water with 100 cals of powder and two gels per hour. I try to finish my bottle evry hour and a gel every half hour to get to 300 cals. I will carry my gel in a flask to keep it convient, conserve space and dont have to worry about crashing or getting all sticky.
