Spokane, Washington
United States
60F / 16C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 45m 34s
Overall Rank = 88/291
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 15/28
Pre-race routine:

Light race day breakfast, I think I finally have this dialed in to start the swim without stomach drama and getting the calories to feel strong for this race distance.
Event warmup:

Not much, This race I actually regret not trying to do a light jog to get blood moving. It was chilly and the water was going to sobering.
Swim
  • 34m 37s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim reminded me why I got into the sport. I had a little fear at the start and was challenged to get a reasonable finish. The presunrise start added to the aura. The current was catching people out at the swim turn around, me included - had trouble getting around the buoy without getting pulled into it. That little jog from the swim ramp back to transition cage (which I did not care for at the time but no doubt reduced foot numbness and discomfort later) got some blood flowing into the feet before heading out on bike. Eventually warmed up and had a decent bike split.

What would you do differently?:

Much more swim yardage in August, I was off peak swim fitness for this event and did not arrive ready to swim at prior race pace.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

OK T1 - got the suit off quicker than I normally do
What would you do differently?:

Satisfied with my improvement over the year - look to getting under 2 min next season
Bike
  • 1h 14m 12s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Strong ride, made up many places. Tried to take the hills conservatively. Did experience some quad discomfort that seemed to be a result of being cold from the start. There was plenty of room for most of the course with very light vehicle traffic.
What would you do differently?:

I think I executed well to leave something to run on.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

OK T2
What would you do differently?:

Increase urgency
Run
  • 52m 37s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Had a goal to run under 50 min. Felt good first couple miles and I knew heat would not be a factor. Then it was time to pay for a bad decision, I decided to run without socks, which I hade never done - classic screw-up! I felt some rubbing on my arches and 5k in I was smoked. My pace dropped and I was distracted by the discomfort. Very likely cost me my run split goal.
What would you do differently?:

Don't try anything new on race day.
Post race
Warm down:

Chit chat with friends, rehydrate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim fitness was off, poor decision on run.

Event comments:

Great venue for the olympic distance, is this the only Olympic in Spokane.

Great race!

We finished within seconds of each other.

I loved the venue and hope to be back. As far as I know it's the only OLY in Spokane. Coeur d' Alene has one though.

Haha, "the swim was going to be sobering."  GREAT way to put it.

Nice job out there - I didn't realize there were other BT-ers out there!  Next time we'll have to arrange a hello!
