I am thinking that as "winter" approaches I will need motivation to keep swimming.  I have heard of masters swim programs.  What exactly are they?  Do I need to be speedy to be a part of one?  Are any of you in one around here?

"masters" just means "old", and by that they mean out of college, usually   Most masters groups have a number of lanes, from fast to slow, and can accomodate all speeds.  It's really just a structured workout, hopefully with a coach on deck to give pointers, etc.   It's a great way to get faster.

Check out USMS.com andsearch for groups in HB.  To be a technical "masters" group requires USMS membership, but there are many that call themselves masters and don'thave USMS affiliation. My current  one  doesn't

Pretty sure there's a masters program at Los Alamitos (pool on the Joint Forces Training Base) and at the Lakewood YMCA.

I belong to the team at the Lakewood YMCA. It is still new...only started in July. They train Mon and Wed at 6-7:15 am and 6-7:15 pm. There is talk of also adding a Thursday night workout. Not sure if they are on the USMS website yet or not. Fees are 20 a month if you're a member of the Y or 30 a month if you're not. There are a lot of levels there...some people very fast, a lot in the middle, and some who are slow. You'd be fine. Here is a link:

Thanks everyone! I just found out that Orange Coast College is starting up a Masters program.  Think I am going to check it out.
