rghbsn - 2009-09-19 5:58 PM My give 100% to avoid injury statement is from a couple of angles. The contact part is valid...if you try to run through a hole in the o-line at 3/4 speed, or 3/4 effort, you're more likely to be running more upright and less compact. Then the team that's losing is still coming at 100% because they have to. You get hit high (because you're running high) and bent over a d-linesman and shred a knee or ankle. Worse, you tackle someone at 1/2 effort and snap your neck because your positioned wrong.

The mental aspect is also valid...if you're thinking about how awesome you look to the cheerleaders because you're winning and get hit helmet to helmet while thinking about the after game party, you're going to get hurt.

I played football from the time I was 9 years old. I played semi-pro soccer. The reason you train as hard as you do, and the reason you give 100% is as much for safety as it is for the "W." I have given 100% plenty of times and gone home with a loss, nothing wrong with that in my book.
I agree with you 100% on every point you made.....that said, why are starters or seniors for that matter still in that game to make it 83-zip? Play every backup you possibly can. They can give the 100% (usually, they'll give 110% being pretty darn happy to play for once). That's my only beef with it. Take the starters out once the game has become ridiculous. Besides, they aren't learning anything playing against a clearly inferior team.

They weren't.  The starters were gone after the first half.  Read the article.

^My bad Crowny2. I missed that on the first read. I have no problem with the 83-0 score.
