Overall Rank = 476/538
Age Group = Clyde
Age Group Rank = 35/42
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45 and had a bagel. Set up my transition stuff and took everything I wanted to stay dry back to my car.
Event warmup:

Did some dynamic warm ups and did a quick swim in the water to check my googles.
Swim
  • 11m 3s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had hoped for a sub 10 performance but the number of people in the way was a factor. I also never got into my efficient swim stroke. I should have jockeyed my way up front since I'm now a middle of the pack swimmer and not a back of the pack swimmer. That wasn't supposed to sound so arrogant.
What would you do differently?:

Get up closer to the front and go faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

I had the perfect placement for the bike leg but I was shocked to see how quick my transition time was. With the rain, my shoes were very wet so I decided to put my shoes on off the bike. My feet got stuck trying to put them on and I thought I lost some valuable time. I ended up 2nd in my group in T1 and that was without practicing as much as some of my other races.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I would try and keep my shoes dry or have a towel that I can keep dry.
Bike
  • 51m 3s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.63 mile/hr
Comments:

This was such a difficult course for me. The hills provided me a huge challenge I felt the Tuesday night hill rides have helped me with my climbing. Next year should be a great test for me.
What would you do differently?:

Hit hills sooner in the year and try and be lighter on my bike for next season.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Sub 2 minutes was my goal for both especially since I decided to run without my socks. I think that will be how I try and do it next year too.
What would you do differently?:

Get the Yankz on my shoes sooner next year.
Run
  • 40m 46s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't actually beat anyone in my age group but someone was DQed and 2 people didn't finish. I wish I had know sub 40 was in play. I would have gone faster at the start and really kicked it at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Harder sooner and harder later. Next year I want to be lighter for my runs and I want to be up to a full half mary by next fall.
Post race
Warm down:

It mostly involved waiting for food and consuming food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

People in the way on the swim, size of the hills on the bike and my chainring bending, and soreness in my quads and glutes on the run.

Event comments:

The drop off policy is completely unnecessary and hopefully will be dropped next year. Also, the proximity to IM Augusta is going to be a problem for them in the future.

I think the time stopped upon entry into the transition area. If that is the case, I am very pleased. I had hoped I could do about a 2:30 pace but there were many people in the way. HR was very high when I got out of the water.

Performance: Average
This was not a 15 mile course but it had two very tough hills. One of the hills had many people off of the bike and pushing up the hill. I stayed on my bike and watched my HR zoom up to the high 170's for the climbs. A significant downhill for the 2nd stretch of the course was a welcome sight.
Wind: Some
Course: Very challenging and also very wet. I hope there were not any wrecks with injuries but I would not have been surprised if there was.

Of course you got wet, DUH!  I clicked thru for the race report, hee.  I agree with you about pre-race bike drop off - that is almost a deal-breaker for us.

Holy cow, that is some hill if folks were walking it! Way to tough it out!

It was so steep, I bent a couple teeth on my 39 tooth chainring. I had to ride the rest of the way with my 53 and my granny gear.
