Event warmup:

Freaking out over the current & waves!!
Swim
  • 20m 24s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Little unhappy w/ the swim time. I've done it in just under 18 min.
But the current is absolutely something you can't account for in comparing to the pool time. They had to yell at me to turn in, and I only knew I was
done when a wave threw me down hard on the sand. My feet were up
behind me, over my head and I couldn't find the surface. Couldn't
breath, then figured out that even if it was my chest getting crushed
on the ground, that that was where the ground was and I could put my
feet on it. And stand up, and not drown. Still that's improvement over the swim I did in May when I got yelled at for swimming off course SEVEN times, and fell down as soon as I stood up!
What would you do differently?:

As always work on sighting, and bilateral breathing. Those are still problems for me.
Transition 1
  • 03m 17s
Comments:

First tri! Never done transitions before. So this is good by definition, right? Nothing to screw up worse than last time, there was no last time!
What would you do differently?:

Had trouble getting bike into the right gear to get going. Made getting up to speed take 10 min or so. Maybe ride a bit BEFORE the race to have the bike ready to go in terms of gears instead of just wherever I left it from last time. Rinse the sand off better somehow. Feet weren't a problem the way I anticipated. It was the sand in my suit that then chaffed the insides of my arms on the run.
Bike
  • 45m 53s
  • 14 miles
  • 18.31 mile/hr
Comments:

REALLY happy w/ the bike. Surprised/pleased that this part was so much fun1 I could see where I was, at all, and relative to the other people. I passed some people even. I was AWARE of it when I did pass, not like in the swim. You can't SEE people 13 feet away from you in the swim. Even if you are passing them, you don't know it. And you go a little faster on the bike b/c
you get frustrated being stuck behind someone.
What would you do differently?:

More training out on the road instead of the spin bike at the gym. I was lazy and did a LOT of it in the gym in the air conditioning. But the technical stuff like shifting gears, turning, and riding in a crowd; you can ONLY get a feel for that out on the road.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

I put average for everything. Never done it before, so I guess this is my baseline for comparison next time.
What would you do differently?:

drink more water
Run
  • 34m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

REALLY happy w/ the run time. Relative for me, that's faster than
I've ever done 5K. But objectively - it's obviously where I start to
look pathetic and out of place in this whole thing.

Clearly I can make the most progress w/ this by working on the run.
What would you do differently?:

More training out on the road. Again I got lazy and did most of the last 2 months on the treadmill in the gym in the air conditions. I did a lot on the road back in May/June - so I didn't have to start entirely from scratch w/ sore quads, etc. But it could have been easier.

Course: Boardwalk. Completely Flat. Good for a first race! No hills, and you can see everything as it comes at you. No surprises. Straight out and back, good to see the other racers on their way back in. Or peoople still on their way out when I was on my way back. People were nice and said congratulations and things like that as they passed each other.
