Age Group Rank = 1/17
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am. Shower. Had a yogurt and OJ before leaving. Had a bagel with CC in the car and a mug of tea. Rest was pretty standard.
Event warmup:

Ran for 10 minutes about 30 minutes before the start. Swam for 5 minutes about 15 minutes before the start.
Swim
  • 10m 6s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got a good start. Front line. I saw 2 guys to my left that were moving pretty good, one of which was really flying. There was another guy to my right who was hanging on, too. I was side by side with the guy to my left for most of the way out, I'd slide up a bit, then he'd move up and I'd think about the draft but then I'd be moving up again. At the turn he had an inside line and accidentally kicked me in the shoulder. No big deal. I jumped on his feet for most of the return until I lost contact. I knew that the guy who was on my right had jumped on my feet. He came around me towards the finish and poppped out just ahead of me.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get in the draft earlier and accept that we were about the same speed and that I could go along for a free ride.
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Long run to TA. Pretty clean T1. My helmet wasn't seated too comfortably when I first put it on so I had to take it off and readjust. Otherwise this was pretty clean. The guy racked next to me was the one who drafted off me. He would go on to win the whole thing. We chatted for a second in T1.

2/17 AG.
12/141 OA.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Bike
  • 46m 44s
  • 16 miles
  • 20.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Out of transition the guy who kicked me on the swim was right in front of me. He got a bit away as he already had his shoes on. I reeled him in during the first few miles and passed him. We probably passed each other 4-5 times over the course of the ride. He was pretty aggressive on teh climbs where I was trying to hold back in order to get back up to speed faster on the flats. Passed the overall swim leader about halfway through the ride and another guy came by us. I tried to keep him in sight for as long as possible and did a pretty good job of it. The guy who was with me came by me with a few miles to go and we entered T2 just a few seconds apart.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much. Just keep riding harder!
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

I got out of my shoes a bit early, but I was able to ride the last downhill pretty strong with my feet on top of the shoes. T2 was clean. My left shoe needed a tiny adjustment to get set. Left T2 with the same guy who was right in front of me.

2/17 AG.
15/141 OA.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. T2 is getting pretty smooth for me.
Run
  • 22m 37s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Out of T2 that same guy was with me. He wasn't in my AG but I figured we'd probably run the whole thing together since we were on each others heels up until then. I told him that he kicked me during the swim and he said, 'oh shit, that was you?!?' Then we talked about the bike. Then we hit the first hill and I motored up it and he fell off the pace. At the top of the hills I was maxed out. Basically wheezing to get enough air in. Then I hit the flats before the next hill and was able to recover a bit and go back to work. At the out and back section I saw the guy ahead of me, 3rd OA, and tried to gauge the distance between us. He looked strong but figured I had to push on. Turns out he had the fastest run split of the day. The trail section was a nice change of pace from the road, and had some good shade. Here it was totally quiet as I was by myself. It felt like a nice run in the woods without anyone around for miles! Got through that and the last couple of section and motored on home.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. I pushed this run pretty hard and it's a fairly tough course.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched. Had to get a band-aid and ointment cause the plastic timing chip band had bloodied my achilles. Talked to some of the other guys and had some snacks and pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. I need to get faster on the bike. Push, push, push.

Event comments:

Setup did good at this one. Good local race for me. Hopefully I can make it back. Would be nice to do the oly/sprint double.

Great job! Why were you chatting during the race? I thought you didn't do this! "It's a RACE!"

I said, "if I knew you were gonna be on my heels during the swim, I wouldn't have racked next to you!".  He laughed and said, "have a good ride".

Great job on the AG win! Very consistent across all three disciplines - looking forward to seeing what you do next year.
