I'M IN! I need something to end the season with, since that HIM was so ugly, and this race about goes right in front of my house! I wasn't going to go in costume, instead I set some ridiculous goals for myself, and was hoping to make some sort of podium finish. Maybe I can think of a running friendly costume.

This is a fun race.  The course has one sizeable hill.  The competition is tough-  An 18:03 netted me 13th overall last year.

Whoa. Well then that may change some things. Well it should still be enjoyable, and I'll still shoot for an age group top three.

2 weeks til race day - i spend the past two weeks 1.) recovering form HIM 2.)walking around disney and overeating.

i am going to the track today to do 400 and 800s.  i'll do a few tempo runs this week a 7 miler next weekend and a few more tempo runs before the race.  Add in some biking for transportation and 2 days of weights and I'll call that training.

I am looking for the elusive 17:59.  I haven't been in the 17's since 1991 when I started losing interest in running and focused on debauchery.  I broke a rib, my back (L5) and tore my ACL and MCL in both knees in 92. Broke my tail bone in 93 broke and my big toe in 2000.  In 2004 I started running again 25 pounds overweight.  It was VERY difficult.  I was 4 minutes off my lifetime PR in my first 5k.  After 2 years of training my heart and muscles (and dropping the weight) I dropped into the 18's but I have been stuck there for a few years.  My own years are going to prevent me from breaking the barrier soon.

I will be in costume but it is a costume that is appropriate for running in.

For your track 400/800's what sort of plan do you use? I havent run a stand alone 5k before (I have only done them in sprint tris 20-21 min range). Do you do a 400 on 2 mins or something like that?

I run an 800 warm up including some dynamics in the second quarter.
I do 400s at mile pace with a quarter recovery.  I do 800s at 5k pace with a quarter recovery.
I usually do about 3 miles total.  I do about the minimum needed.  I would benefit from more speed work.

My workout yesterday was 6.75 bike to track, 800 w/u with dynamics including 100 m of pick ups/bursts.  200 @ 35 sec, 200 easy, 400 @1:15, 400 easy, 800 @ 2:42 , 400 easy, 400@ 1:19, 600 easy, 200 @ 36, 400 easy, 6.75 bike home

other interval workouts -
800 w/u, 400, 600, 800, 600, 400, with 400 easy after each

800 w/u 8x400s @ 80 sec with 40 sec walk recovery each 800 c/d

400 w/u  6x800s @ 3:00 with 60 sec walk recovery each 400 c/d

OK I think I have decided to dress as obscure Marvel character Iron Fist. I need a yellow Karate belt. Anyone have one I could borrow?

I want to run a 17:59 and am a little worried about running in an untried costume. It is spandex but it is very thick spandex and has a huge collar and the belt I currently have is long and think.

My family won't be there because one the kids' friends is having a birthday party at the same time.

When I am not running around or spending time in the bathroom I will be in the lobby of the school near the vending machines.

Ahhh!  I've got to finish my costume.  And train.  And maybe not die during the race.  I've haven't been training since I had my surgery but I cheated and took my stitches out early.  Legs felt pretty bad tonight but I'm excited.

Marvel huah Brue?  Maybe I'll run in my BlackCat costume instead?

I didn't feel 100% going in and my time was off. I don't know my finish time but I know I saw the clock turn to 18:00 well before I hit the shoot. The costume sash, collar and mask were hinderances as well.

The season is now over. Next race scheduled is in early March.
