Subject: Cycling with Stress Fracture in Foot??
I just was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my foot and am wearing this gawd-awful boot whenever I walk on it!

The DR said I can't do anything but swim.  No cycling unless I wear the boot while doing it!  I don't see how my shoes would be much different.  Your feet can't bend in cycling shoes.

So my question is: did anyone cycle throughout a stress fracture in their foot?  Does it prevent healing, etc?

Where is the fracture? I had a metatarsal and two sesmoids fractured plus plantar faciitis -in both feet.. Im in my 6th month of recovery..  My pod. said he could put me in a boot or just let me take it easy. I opted out of the boot. I rode until it would get too painful. I took the insoles out of my cycling shoes and replaced them with orthotics, I had to buy new cycling shoes in a wide to make up for the room the orthotics took up. I have been to 2 podiatrist, a phys therapist, an ortho, and my most recent x rays show one sesmoid is still in two pieces seperated by a pretty good distance, but the other two bones look good. I can do most activity and not notice the sesmoid fracture, but sometimes it makes itself known.  I guess it all depends on the severity of the breaks if you'll  want to try to ride with it. I think it can be safely done if you dont go out and hammer, and if you use a supportive, cushioned insole. Hope your back out there soon!

Thanks for your reply.  Six month, eh?  It helps to hear what others have gone through.

They can't see the stress fracture yet on xrays but it hurts so bad that I know it is something.  I can swim without pain but can't stand or walk.  I want to set my bike on a trainer and see it it hurts to pedal.  I just wanted to make sure I wasn''t damaging it first.  I think I am going to get a second opinion on everything but that will take a couple weeks.

When I go back in three weeks, they think the fracture will show up due to the healing.  I wouldn't be surprised it if is in more than one place given the pain.

Let pain be your guide. The first couple of weeks, I couldn't ride, but after that, I rode (in cycling shoes) on the trainer with light resistance. I didn't move outside--or increase resistance--until I was out of the boot and walking pain free.

ANYTHING that hurt at all got vetoed.

Been there. About six weeks in boot and one of those weeks was on crutches.

I went this morning and spent 40 min in deep water aqua jogging (not touching the bottom of the pool or anything).  Then the doctor said I CANNOT even do that.  I will definitely be getting a second opinion.

It actually hurts to walk but I still have to walk somewhat to get to and from work, the bathroom, etc.

I never thought someone would tell me that aqua jogging was too stressful on my joints!

Swimming did not bother my stress fracture. The flip turns did. So I flipped and pushed with the good foot or did open turns.

You can bike in the boot on the trainer.  Put a platform pedal on that side.  I'd let pain be your guide int eh shoe. Honestly if its hurting to just walk I'd be cautious initially.  You dont' want to turn something simple into a disaster that takes months instead of weeks to get over.  Yes get another opinionand ask about a bone stimulator.  May help you heal faster,

Socks - yep...that is about it.  When I can walk without pain...

My new doctor (MD and sports medicine specialist) said I can pool run and swim.  I find that the pool running annoys my foot and am thinking a week without it may be best for me.

He also said I can ride my bike when I can walk without pain...which is NOT today.

I had a stress fracture in my heel earlier this year and doc told me I could bike as long as it did not cause pain.  Mine was very minor and did not require a boot - so bottom line I would listen to your doc... or a doc if you're not happy with yours.

i second a lot of this.  i had a sesamoid stress fracture that had me in a boot for 6 mo (i was going CRAZY)...at first, i was just able to swim (no flip turns) then i could do spinning and cycling so long as i didn't stand.  foot stress fractures are loooong to heal (in fact, it's been a year since it was first diagnosed and i am still having trouble with it) so i would be a bit conservative when venturing outside of your docs directives.

Just to add my 2 cents... I was diagnosed yesterday with a Jones Fracture. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I have to have surgery to get me back on my feet. Definitely go see a 2nd Dr- they might not give you the advice you want to hear, but sometimes taking the good advice will benefit you in the long term. This is my 2nd stress fracture, and I learned the hard way with the first one.
