Age Group Rank = 3/10
Pre-race routine:

Up very early to make the 2hr drive that turned out to be 1.5hrs. Pitch black when I arrived and a few folks milling around. Signed in and eventually racked the bike when I could see. Gorgeous morning.
Event warmup:

Light stretching. Bob and I setup and talked to a few of the other folks. Should have had more to drink though.
Swim
  • 24m 50s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

good start but terrible sighting. I bet I could have knocked off ~30 seconds if I would have done better. Also, last leg of triangle coming to shore was very difficult to sight the exit. had to sight 2-3 times more often.
What would you do differently?:

sight better, swim a bit harder
Transition 1
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

ok. took time to grab a quick drink knowing the ride would be tough.
What would you do differently?:

work on wetsuit removal more
Bike
  • 1h 32m 57s
  • 27 miles
  • 17.43 mile/hr
Comments:

tough first hill up East Campground Rd. Another longer hill at bridge took some effort but the back end was nice and fast. Hills got easier on second and third laps but still very tough. got passed a few times but couldn't tell if they were duathlon guys or not.
What would you do differently?:

work on hills more although I knew they would be hard.
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

pretty good overall. probably should have taken an extra drink in hindsight.
What would you do differently?:

not much.
Run
  • 46m 43s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

cramped up in spots but ran through them. Nice run course and enjoyed the trail running. achieved the pace I wanted, maybe could have pushed it some more. passed a few folks on the one semi-major hill on both laps. I think I passed the guy who placed 4th in my AG on the run. I guess it took that long to catch up.
What would you do differently?:

hydrate more
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

hydration and sighting

Event comments:

nice event. will probably do it again. would like to see better race results. The duathlon and team results were mixed with tri results.

Glad you had a good time and race.

I was there as a volunteer.  Jay the RD puts on a decent race and it’s a great cause.   I love that course, but have yet to do the Oly.  I have done a few of the Pinchot sprints.  The past has been about 4 races out there per year.  I have heard that 1 race is going to be cut next year.

Nice racing with you Matt.  I agree, that first time up Campgroud rd is a .

Pinchot is such a great place for a triathlon.  Great bike course....and you won't find a nice run in the area.  I do hope they keep having the Oly in Sept.

Matt,
Great time!  This was my first tri and it was a lot of fun.  Luckily, I live in the area so I was used to the hills.  I wasn't fast but I was able to at least do the route despite being the heaviest guy there.

James,
Where were you hanging out as a volunteer?  I think I said something either joking around or thanking every volunteer I saw.  I also really hope they continue to have this OLY at Pinchot.  I want to shave about half an hour off my time for next year.

I was one of the Lifeguards.  Then I worked on directing the bikes into the transition area, at the 90 degree turn with all the cones.
