Swim
Comments: Definitely longer than a 400 yard swim. We would have had an exact measurement but Jim dropped his Garmin at the first buoy. At least 600+ yards. One gal told me it was 800. That makes more sense given my splits; I'm usually 2:15/100. Since we were swimming South against the current I lined up close to the first buoy. Probably my best job of navigation in a race yet. Swam smooth, breast stroked just a tad if I needed to sight. Relatively crowded, physical swim. Took it very easy and tried to concentrate on keeping my stroke and staying smooth, but I was still slow as heck. Been working on my swim and while I'm becoming more adept and comfortable I'm still way slow. What would you do differently?: Not much really. I know I'm stuck w/ the swim I have until I get some good instruction. Transition 1
Comments: Didn't rush. Pulled off a flying mount but bashed my L ankle hard on the crank. Bike
Comments: Took it easy again, more of an mellow Oli pace than a sprint. SSW crossing headwind slowed us on the south sections a bit. Saw a gal in a nasty wreck at the N turn. Hope she was OK! What would you do differently?: Not much, followed my game plan. Transition 2
Comments: Weird racks so it took me a few extra seconds to get my bike upright. Took a little extra time to clean my feet and add socks. Run
Comments: My best 5k by 1:30. Started a bit slow and had some R calf tightness. Ran 2x5K the previous day in my Nike Frees and woke up tight and sore in my feet and lower legs since I hadn't trained in them much. Didn't find my speed until the last mile. Powered up the bridge and it felt like I was in 8:30 territory that final mile. What would you do differently?: Need to work my Frees in to my regular run training a bit more. Post race
Warm down: Had a bit of OJ and some grapes and pineapple. Really hit the spot. Walked around and jawed with some old & new friends. Cheered for Max crossing the finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: My gameplan. I'm 6 weeks out from my first HIM and I've been training a lot lately. I was already a bit tired and sore this week so I really planned to race this event more for fun and practice rather than full out Sprint pace. Of course when I look at the results and see that if I had put a little giddyap in my step I could have jumped a few spaces in the results I felt a pang of regret, but I give myself credit for sticking to the gameplan. I wasn't making the podium anyway, and had a long ride scheduled for the next day. Event comments: A fun race and a great way to spend a Sunday morning. Last updated: 2009-08-11 12:00 AM
