Hey Colorado Peeps,

Have a location question I was hoping to get some feedback on. My bf is moving out to Denver and is looking at a place to rent that is on MLK and Steele Street. Anyone know this area and whether or not it's safe?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I live pretty close to that area - a couple blocks south of MLK but to the east of Colorado Blvd which is a large north-south street, while Steele St is to the west of it.

In this area a lot depends on the block you live on and in general, south of MLK is better than north of it.   If he could find out what the rental vs owner occupied rate on that block/surrounding blocks is that might be helpful.

The immediate area that I live in is mostly owner occupied and quite a few of our neighbors have lived here >10 years  and even some for 30+ (I've lived here for 9.5 yrs).  Although we don't spend a lot of time socializing, the neighbors are friendly and there is a sense that people keep an eye out for (and sometimes an eye on) their neighbors.

That said, there are nights when we've heard gun fire that doesn't sound all that far away and other nights when it seems like the the police helicopter is circling around for hours.  Those nights are in the minority and they seem less frequent now than several years ago.  The only issues we have ever had is that someone smashed the driver's side window of my wife's car once and another incident where my license plates were stolen. (we don't have a garage & so park on the street). I feel comfortable running alone at night in the neighborhood and at City park which is nearby.  My wife does not, but probably would not in most areas of Denver, not just this area.

Sorry I can't give you a more clear cut answer on this, but hopefully it's somewhat helpful.

s single girl moving to Denver....I would not want to live in that area.
Just my opinion.
When I moved here I took the first place I could find in the ghetto zone...I wish I had someone to help me figure it out.
keep looking there are some nicer areas.
pm me if you need some help.

On a positive note, there's a firehouse on the NE corner of MLK Blvd & Steele.

but it's not the greatest neighborhood

As stated by Chris Rock, if you are on or near a MLK road, you know there is some violence going on!

Hope everything works out for you and your move.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. We decided to say negative to the MLK location and are currently looking at a place in the Highlands (?) on 38th and Eliot. Seems like it might be a better area...

The Highlands area is a great place to be.  Definitely would be in my top 3 city neighborhoods to live in, the others being Park Hill (where I currently live) and Platt Park (just NW of Univ of Denver).

I've lived in the area (closer to 44th) for 11 years and love it. Plus, you'll be close to the Highland (15th & Boulder area), 32nd & Lowell and Tennyson Street districts for local restaurants and shopping...nice. Good luck.
