Event warmup:

i ran about a mile.
Swim
  • 34m 59s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was swimming OK but really didn't get into a grove until the last quarter.

I hit my goal of 35 minutes
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a wetsuit?
Transition 1
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Dropped a cliff bar that I stopped and went back ten feet for.

Flying mount? Fuget about it. - I barely got on at all.
What would you do differently?:

Practice Practice Practice.
Bike
  • 2h 46m 8s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.22 mile/hr
Comments:

my computer decided not to work. i paced with a few people most of the time - with the guy who was 3rd in my AG mostly.

my aero bottle didn't fit right in my new aerobars (replaced last week b/c the old ones broke). the rubber bands didn't keep it straight or tight and eventually broke. i tossed it and my shirt to a friend at the turn around before lap 3.

i hit my 20mph goal!
What would you do differently?:

test equip - even seemingly insignificant stuff. maybe do away with aero bottle all together.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

nothing really went wrong here - i just didn't rush. there was a little traffic as well.
What would you do differently?:

SOCKS!!!! Get some tri specific shoes
Run
  • 1h 41m 59s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I went shirtless (removed 2/3 of way through bike) and didn't use sunscreen. I didn't wear socks. I didn't take in enough calories before the run. Result? Sunburn, mild dehydration, several large blisters, out of energy.

The first half was decent. My mistakes cost me over 5 minutes in the second half.
What would you do differently?:

Use sunscreen even if I think I don't need to. Drink even if it may make me need to pee. Wear socks - the 10 seconds to put them on is worth it. Eat another Cliff bar toward the end of the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked to the water and waded.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition / hydration plan was the primary cause for finishing below ability.

Not testing everything in race conditions was my second biggest mistake.

Insufficient long training days was the 3rd limiting factor.

Event comments:

This was a nice redemption for HFP - I started my season at Miami of Ohio and they really gave me a bad first impression. This race was well organized and run. It was my first HIM and I am 50/50 on doing another. It made me realize I am not ready for IM yet.

I was thinking about our conversation after the race on Sunday. You said you were not sure about an IM after this one. If you change your mind let me know. I'm thinking about the 2011 season already, that'll be my next chance for a IM.

You looked strong when I saw you on your last run loop. Sub 8 M/M is pretty good for 13.1 off the bike. Well done.

Oh, and thanks for watching the kids for a few minutes so I could tend to Alice.

Great job on your first HIM.  You certainly learned a lot and I agree that after the pain is forgotten you'll probably want to see if you can correct any mistakes.

Dude, you smoked all three legs!!! I don't care how you felt.

A 5:05 is AWESOME! And 20+ mph on the bike rocks. (especially in the breezy conditions)

Dude - I saw you shirtless on the run, and I was like - hey! - he said he was going to wear a shirt!

I had mine hanging on the bike and threw it off in T1. I was plenty warm and decided just to go with my race top. I also did not use sunscreen. When we started, it was raining and 65 degrees. It's also AUTUMN people, and everyone knows you don't get a sunburn in AUTUMN. But I did.

Nice race! You stuck it out, despite giving me the "off with their heads" signal at mile 10.

During the race I was feeling there was no way I could do IM, but now today I am feeling better about it. (Which is good since I already signed up.)

nice job! Thanks again about the kids!

Thanks guys

and Alice - that was the "I've been through the guillotine" sign, not the "off with your head" sign.

Great Job, and everyones telling me that my swim time was fast. If you want to do a HIM earlier in the season think about driving over to Muncie for the Endurathon. The race is run super and its a closed course.

Smoking fast times (as usual) Congrats on your first half. What's next, a full IM perhaps?

Awesome job Brue. It must feel good to have no weakness and do so well in your first HIM.
