I did a search and came up with nothing, so I hope I am not starting a redundant thread.
I have a sprint this weekend and by the time I/we get to the bike/run portion(swimming is done in an indoor pool), the weather is supposed to be 45-50 degrees.
Any recommendations on particular clothing, food, nuances, etc. that one should have or know about. The other tris I have done this year, the weather was in the 70's-80's.
Thanks.

I am usually fine with those temps in arm warmers but if the wind is blowing that makes a difference I may throw on a long sleeve dri fit over race top but with a sprint depending on the distance I would probably stick with the arm warmers and maybe knee warmers.

Don't forget to hydrate.  When it's cooler, most people don't remember to drink enough cause they think they aren't sweating as much.

Arm warmers and knee warmers? Are you talking about neoprene sleeves or something else?

Are you doing the tri in Sioux City this Saturday?  I'm doing the same one and have wondered about the weather as well.

As I was riding my bike to work this morning I passed a sign that said the temp was 40 degrees. The thought ran through my head, "why the heck am I doing a race in October?" Smile

Hopefully the adrenaline will compensate for the low temps.

I assume you'll be wet getting onto the bike - right?  Unless you're planning a full change in T1, I would not recommend trying to struggle with arm or leg warmers.  They are hard enough to get on dry and not in a race.

I would towel off very quickly and wear a wind-breaker bike jacket.  I did a race in pretty close temps to that in June (50s and rain) and I put on my jacket fairly easily.  Barelegs will be okay, although it will hurt a little.  If this were a longer race I would think differently.

By the time you get to the run, you'll probably want to take off a jacket and will be warm enough for regular clothes.

Yes I am.
Did you do the Triple V in Yankton last month? I was there and had a horrific OWS. It was my first. Great venue and tri though.

I had other things going on that weekend, so I couldn't make that one. I did do Le Mars on the 12th.

It was about 58 and cloudy that morning, with absolutely no wind. A little chilly when I first started out but about right once I hit the run.

Drop 10 degrees off of that and add some wind and we're going to be shivering once we come out of the swim!

Yeah, I am hopeful it will be around 50 by the time we get out to biking/running. I am not a fan of cold(er) weather running.
I hope this event turns out ok, as I see this is their first year.
I will be in blue shorts with an orange shirt. Maybe I will see you there.

I'll be in a red, white and black tri-suit with "Ironman" printed on the leg. Like I could even fathom doing an Ironman.

Also, I may have blue skin. But we might all be that way. This morning it's 40-some degrees and raining in Sioux Falls. Hopefully at least the rain will let up.

Supposed to be partly cloudy with no rain, or so the Ntl. Weather Service is saying. Oh well, this is only my 3rd sprint, so it looks to be another adventure.
Also, change of plans, I went and bought a black long sleeve dri-fit shirt to wear instead of the orange short sleeve.
I will look for the "Ironman" though.
I have no idea how many are signed up.

One thing that I like to use in those situations is neoprene toe warmers on my bike shoes. They can really make the difference in preventing toe-cicles. And I agree with BikerGrrrl: putting a shirt on a cold, wet body can be an exercise in frustration. Wearing a tri top for the swim and then putting on a cycling jacket/windbreaker in T1 would probably serve you better.

It's a sprint so hydration isn't really that big of a deal. For a sprint, I might take one cup of water on the run, but that's it.

Thanks for all the help. Will be leaving to head up there in a couple of hours so will make do with what I have. Long sleeve dri-fit shirt(it fits fairly loose), neoprene sleeves for my calves/achilles(I use these when lifting weights) and mental fortitude. Very windy out today(30mph gusts) so I hope they die down for tomorrow.

I was at Target over lunch and they had long sleeve dri-fit shirts on sale, so i picked up a red one. I figure I can throw it on over my tri-suit at T1.

Looks like there are about 100 people signed up, with about 70 of them in the individual competition.

Should be a good time regardless of the weather!
