Triathlete Nation ~ Texas!
Subject: RE: LONE STAR IM 70.3
Man, if your not pumped about this race after reading this...check your pulse!  I know it's low anyway...resting sub 60 ~ whatever! lol!  I like it ~ I am looking forward to it ~ a great way to kick off the 2010 season!  Let's do it!

Thanks for the info KEJ ~

KEJ - 2009-10-02 8:59 AM Just back from Galveston, and meeting with Beach Patrol, Moody Gardens, etc.... Here's the skinny....the race isn't gonna change, folks. We'd planned for a while to move the Quarter to Saturday, to have a true Olympic. It also eliminates the MANY complaints I had from Half Iron athletes who had to start really late on Sunday. I'm sure you're wondering why we just don't start the half Iron first...there are several logistical reasons, and uh, we do actually think about this stuff I think a true Oly will be great. What will change is the size of the 70.3. It'll still be limited to 1800 or so, and we had a meeting with the Beach Patrol yesterday to discuss swim waves, etc. Our waves will remain small, only 100 probably. Same as last year. They'll go off every 5 minutes. It's one of the ways we keep the drafting in check. Keep in mind there were 1700 or so athletes on the course last year on Sunday...did it seem crowded? There are ways to deal with this. Do I think it's a good thing to have Ironman 70.3? Yes, I do. The city is very excited about it, and it opens more doors for support, etc. Those are CRITICAL to the future of the race. Moody Gardens is also fired up. BOTH VERY GOOD THINGS!!!! I'm still really curious to think why it isn't a good thing. Will it sell out faster? I REALLY hope so. It makes things MUCH easier on us to order the correct # of shirts, hats, waterbottles, schwag, course supplies etc. You all probably don't understand how much notice it requires to line this stuff up. It's very difficult when the race sells out close to race date.... Will the race be worse? Nope, in fact we're already working on the improvements we're planning on implementing for 2010. This is a huge passion of mine, and we're incredibly proud of what we do....

With the amount of time you spend in Texas, I would think this should be y'all.

Keith, my only request is that you continue to make this a top priority. I have no complaints about last year at all. Granted my wave went off pretty early in the 1/2 and I had a fast bike split, but in the time I was out there I didn't see any packs or see more than a handful of blatant drafters. That's excellent for a such a flat course. I just want it to stay that way.

I've been doing this for 10 years. Do you think I'd change my priorities now????
Another reason for the change in the Longhorn bike course (yes, LONGHORN) was due to the crossover on the bike course at miles 54 and 10.

Because of this crossover, we had to tighten up the waves so the fastest swimmer/cyclist didn't cross with the slowest at that point.

We've eliminated that crossover. Waves will be 5 mins apart for Longhorn, which should help immensely with the controlling drafting/congestion....

see, we really do spend some time thinking about putting on the events. I know it's hard to believe, but we do....

Since many RDs don't seem to care much at all about drafting that goes on, it never hurts to make one's preferences clear, even when that RD is as responsive to his customers as you are.

Good news on the Longhorn course change. I saw more drafting at Longhorn last year than I did at Lonestar, believe it or not, especially in the first 10-15 miles.

Is it still going to be a 4 loop run course again for 2010?

yes, it'll be 4 loops again. The overwhelming vote in the survey was to keep it 4 loops.

The bike will be 1 loop, not 1.5 loops. The road on the other side the pass has been fixed, so we'll be able to go into Brazoria County for 2010....

Keith is there going to be bike transport for out of towners coming in?  If so where is the bike pick up, at the shop or at the race site?  I see Endorfun site has it on there in the FAQ's but the new WTC site does not.    Thanks!

Famous last words... lol!   I would think that you may be pushing your luck past the end of Dec... as the price goes up.  My plan is to drop the coin 2 weeks from tomorrow. (a lil' extra in that paycheck, so it won't hurt as badly).   Unless Kieth comes on and sends us into panic mode...then it will be tomorrow! lol!

I'm just doing the Olympic, so I'm not so worried.

Still, The field is going to more than double in size. I just don't see it filling up super early.

This will be my first half-Iron.  Has the Lone-star EVER had a non-wetsuit legal race?  The wetsuit is important to me, at least for my first half.  Thanks.

It's 3 weeks later than normal this year, so it's going be to a close call I think.

I'd still be shocked if it wasn't wetsuit legal. If remember right, the temps the last 2 years have been 68 and 72. That's a still quite a ways from non-legal.

So what kind of wheel setup are you natives running at Lonestar, based on the fact that it looks like you can get some nasty wind there.

Am I going to get blown off course with my tri-spoke front and wheelcover rear?

I love my 'bolt-on' aero benefit, so I'll take my chances!  Hoping to add a 50-60mm front by then too!  Ideally, a new wheel set... 808/1080 I am working on securing the coinage (standing on corner with sign - "Can't lie, need new aero wheel set!") for this very setup and would love to have it by then... Daddy needs a new set of wheels!

404 front and disk rear, same as last year. I'd use deeper on the front if I had it.
