Subject: Anyone racing 2010 ?

I just found out from my race team that any race I volunteer at next year they will pay my entries for my events. Im planning on doing 7 or eight crits and road races if my body and bike hold up. My goal is to get out of Cat 5 as fast as I can and get as much experience as I can without getting injured. Anyone else?

I raced Cat5 this year.  Have enough experience to cat up to 4, but I just don't feel fast enough.  I'll see how the training goes over the winter and how I feel.  I'm thinking of doing another season at 5, or at least a few more races and see how I'm feeling relative to the rest of the field.  It's so hard to tell when you're ready to cat up from 5 to 4, since there are people in 5 that could easily be 4's and 3's, and there are people in the Cat 5 fields that are just out there trying it out.

Either way, I'm hooked.

I raced a few road races and crits this year.  Cracked the top 10 a couple times in the cat 5 races.  This was my first year and it was an incredible experience!  Unfortunately, I live where nobody races and all cyclists really just do triathlon.  I'll get a couple more races in 2010 to cat up to 4.  I just wish I had a team to ride with and I'd go pure roadie.

Kmill, I see you are from Baton Rouge.  Did you race in the Vuelta Acadiana in Lafayette back in July?  I made the trek from East Texas to race, and it was a blast!  Very, very flat down there!

Joined a team this year with plans of riding with the team and doing some racing.

My running schedule kind of put a hurt on the road cycling, didn't realize just how hard the marathon training would be.

I pretty much have my 2010 schedule set and will allow me to have plenty of time to race.  This is a great area for bike racing, multiple training series for new Cat 5's to get their feet wet before jumping right in.

I did do some TT's last year also, those are such a blast.

I've had a pretty limited crit schedule the last few years and don't know if I like doing them more than racing tri's - Schedule is already a little cramped. Some of the folks I've come up against in 4/5's have been absurdly strong, so competition has been about right - I will say that some of the kids in the pack are a little too kamikaze for my taste..Long winded answer is I don't know what 2010 might bring.

I am brand new to racing, and to be honest my speed is not blazing by any means. I will be training with riders from Cat 5 to the top and they have assured me of two things, I will get dropped and I will get faster. Fortunately I know the roads in this area well because I plan on doing allot of riding with them! They all agree that racing is the best thing for improving.

Yep, sure did!  What a FAST race huh?  That was my best crit of the year.  The road race was DICEY, so I didn't even try to get to the front for the spring.  And the TT was brutal for me.  My legs felt like cement, lol.

I ride for Tiger Cycling Foundation, in the White/Black tiger striped unis.  You might have seen 3 or 4 of us in the Cat5 race.

I plan to do mountain bike and road racing 50/50 with one or two tri's.

I tried mountain bike racing this year for the first time and had a blast. We have a good org out here called Psycowpath with a 8 race mountain bike series. I took 2nd in my class for the year and I am hooked. I tried two road races and got my A$$ kicked, so I am motivated on doing more road next year and hopefully make a podium or two.

anyone out there race mountain bikes or mainly road ?

Mark

Oh yeah!  I can't experience that type of speed here.  I think we averaged 25-26 mph for the crit.  And there were some great time-trialers there too!  I thought I had a top 5 when I saw my 27+, but it didn't quite hold.

I do remember the white/black jerseys.  I was the fool in the road race with the burnt orange Texas Longhorn jersey that thought he could breakaway with 3 miles left.  Heh, that didn't work all that well!  It sure was fun to try though.

No kidding, I looked back at my log, and we averaged almost 25 for the road race, and 25.5 for the crit!  I guess you were able to avoid the crashes at the end of the road race, huh?  You do any racing in Texas?  I hear there are some awesome races up there.  Some of our faster guys (Cat4, bout to be Cat3 guys) do some racing in Texas, I've been toying with the idea of making a trip to one next season.

Yeah, I was on the outside of the crash when it happened.  There are alot of races in Texas, but most of it is in Central Texas (Austin - San Antonio).  And unfortunately, that's a 5-6 hour drive for me.  It's actually closer to race in Louisiana.

If you could make it to any race, I'd recommend Fayetteville Stage Race.  It's between Houston and San Antonio.  RR, TT, RR format over a couple days.  Good fun!  Check out www.txbra.org for a list of races in Texas.

Add me to the list of those racing in 2010 --  track, crits, TT's, and road races.

This year, I did about 40 race days during the season (March through September).  Next year, I'll do fewer hilly road races and add more track races. I've only recently started racing track, but it's pretty addicting.

Track racing sure looks like alot of fun!  How would you compare the experience of track racing to crit racing?

Oh it is fun!

The mass start track races involve the same types of skills as crits, for the most part .

I've heard some of the guys say that track is like road racing --- but with the boring parts removed (maybe it's mostly the sprinters who say that).  The races are shorter and the packs usually smaller.  Also, the sprints come more quickly and more often.  On a typical local race day (as opposed to special events or championships), you'll do several short races.

It feels more like games sometimes.  Perhaps because they are so short and there is such an interesting variety of possibilities.
