Subject: Chicago Eliminated from 2016 Olympics

Just heard that Chicago was eliminated from consideration in the first round. I found that surprising, the first round.

I heard 70% of either Chicago or Illinois people were against having the Olympics there, why would that be?

There have been a ton of threads on it.  I live in Chicago.  I was for it, until our Mayor put the taxpayers on the hook for it in June.  It went from 75% support to 47% support after he did that.  Chicago has a history of major corruption (just a matter of time before the FBI gets Daley) and when it feel onto the taxpayers to cover any short fall, that crushed the support.

I believe that no Olympics has turned a profit since the Los Angles games of 1984. It costs Billions and does not bring in nearly that much $$$$.

"Over the last several years, sometimes that fundamental truth about the United States has been lost," Obama said. "One of the legacies, I think, of this Olympic Games in Chicago would be a restoration of that understanding of what the United States is all about and the United States' recognition of how we are linked to the world."

Meh.

Rio really has the most compelling argument--no Olympics ever held in South America. They sound like the front-runner. Madrid's a tough sell because by 2016, there will have been several in a row in Europe (three I think).

And how much fun would the Olympics be in Rio?! Par-tay!

Just be sure to dodge the fire from the gang warfare that is going on as you're getting from one venue to the next.

Rumor has it the Rio will get in based on having better hookers...or perhaps at least more of them.

Weird.  My translation of his comments was: "The fundamental truth that the US is a strong ally of the world at large, and a nation built on openess and acceptance of others, has been lost because of the nonsense of the Bush years, and this is our opportunity to show the world that the US is, and always has been, a uniting force and not a dividing force for the world."

No, your filter slants left.  Mine is in the middle and takes it at face value.  I think there are a lot of good years and good reasons to be a part of this country and that could have been used to sell it.  Sorry, but we need to look forward as a country so lets stop looking back to those nonsense year and move forward by action and not apology.  Dont make my comments more political than saying its a crummy sales pitch.  Geez, maybe if he and Michelle dressed like the Blues Brothers and did another tired rendition of Sweet Home Chicago we would have at least made it to the second round.

My translation is: Crap....Now I have to deal real issues that concern the United States like the economy, an ineffective congress, and Iran.

Before I opened this thread, I put the over/under on how many posts it would take before people started talking about Obama more than the olympics at 3. I'm glad to see I wasn't disappointed by the predictability of the CoJ pundits.

If we strip out the name and look at the sales pitch, is it a good sales pitch?  I voted 3rd party if that helps show my motivation here?

Does anyone else see a possible problem with trying to use an event hosted in Chicago, a town where there would almost inevitably be some corruption scandal leading up to the event, to show the rest of the world  what America is really about?
