If I pin my number to the front of my shirt that I put on after the swim, then one the bike, wouldn't it be a bit of a nuisance in the front? I've noticed that some people use those belt to wear their numbers on the back during the bike and then rotate it to the front on the run. What do you do?

Belt.

Best piece of equipment that I never paid far (free with my Duofols order). Invest $5 and be happy.

BTW, putting on a shirt in T1 is going to prove to be a PITA.

I use a race belt. They're cheap, comfortable and you can also use them in all you running races, in addition to tri's.

Belt.  Just remember to spin the number back to the front before you cross the finish line.

Read my race report for advice on the shirt thing..

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

If you can get a race belt by race time.. it's the thing to do. if not, improvise.

having the number on during the bike wasn't a problem for me.. getting it on was a BIG problem.

Related question, is it required to wear your number during the bike or just during the run for most 1/2 IM races?

Time penalties can be assessed for not having your bib number on during the run.  It is not necessary during the bike since your bike/helmet already have the numbers on them.

It is all about the belt -- for the twentieth time. The only other suggestion I would make is to put a hole punch into your bags so you can make adjustments to the hole location so it fits your belt snaps better. I wouldn't ever cut your number to make it shorter, but adjusting the hole placement hasn't ever gotten me into trouble.

Rollin' Thunder - 2005-05-25 11:39 AM make adjustments to the hole location so it fits your belt snaps better.  Mike

I used my race belt for the first time this last weekend and I was shocked that the holes on my race number didn't match up with my belt.  The hole punch is a great idea- I ended up having my race number hanging by one snap.  I guess I assumed that the hole spacing on race numbers would be a pretty standard thing.

My race belt has adjustable loops to hold the number. That way, it doesn't matter how far apart the holes on the race number are, I just slide the loops to fit.

Do you have to snap it through the holes? Or can you just snap through the paper number?

I tried just snapping it through the paper number, but it tore the paper at some point during the run...by the time I finished the race it was dangling by the one snap.

I never would have thought of the hole punch....I wonder what other strange things people put in their bags?

Belt. I like to keep my numbers in tact (just a little weird thing of mine). I got one at a pre-race expo with adjustable clips to fit the holes.

When the number fist gets attached to my race belt, the snaps are too close together.

BUT, once I stretch it to fit around my spare tire beer gut midsection, the snaps stretch to the proper position.  I haven't had a problem with using the too close snaps on the existing number holes.

My belt has loops, and I have noticed that the holes on the bib are always to small, so I tear the holes a little bit.   Hole Punch.  What a good idea.

Like to find a belt that has snaps.

Have a RaceReady singlet that has built in snaps for 4 corners on the front.

Belt. It makes things really convenient. When I feel that the race number is in the way, I just rotate it to the back, and only when I am approaching finish line, I move it again to the front.

Someone above asked about whether you need to wear it on the bike.  Listen up at the prerace meeting (which you should ALWAYS attend).  My Oly on Sunday had no bike or helmet numbers.  They specifically stated during the prerace meeting that you were NOT required to wear your race number on the bike.  They would use your body marks to ID you.  So the short answer to that question is that IT DEPENDS.  It depends entirely on the race and what the race directors say.

I saw/heard one person with their number on during the bike...flap flap flap flap flap....So yes, the number would be a nuisance on the bike
