I seem to have 3 or 4 of them in the tain't region - you know, tain't exactly the front and tain't exactly in the back.. (Bob and Tom listeners will be very clear on this). Everything I've read says keep 'em dry and clean (duh) and do not apply a salve. Any home remedies for clearing them up?

acne medication. Apply 2-3x per day and go commando as much as possible to dry them out.

Next, figure out the cause. Saddle too high, hygiene, and an irritating seam in shorts are some common causes.

triman50 (Bob and Tom listeners will be very clear on this).

Perfectly clear!  Miss the old days before censorship when they could play all the good songs and parodies.

If you ride, you will get them. I use a product called by the unfortunate name of "butt butter", it works.

Should be able to find it your LBS.  Also, you may want to try Desitin or straight zinc-oxide.  Either one of these will help to dry the area out speed healing.

I don't use it, but others swear by Boudreaux's Butt Paste (http://www.buttpaste.com/ ). Has the aforementioned zinc oxide.

Thanks Bear, I'm going to check Walgreen's. Hope I can find it on the shelf - don't feel like asking the checkout girl for butt paste!

There's another product I use called, oddly enough, Assos and is made in Sweden.  Its a cream that you rub into the chamois of your riding shorts.  It is antibacterial and also "lubes" the area to prevent chafing.  It also has some menthol in it, so when you do stand up on the climb, the air flow causes a nice, cool sensation down there...

Walgreen's does have it...well, atleast they have it down here.  Bought some last night.  First ride tonight to give it a try.  All the local riders down here swear by it.

Huh?!? I'm not sure what the danger is, teenagers put the stuff on their face every day. I'm not talking about using it like a chamois cream. You treat the sores the same way you treat a pimple, apply a dab of clearasil / oxy-10 / etc. to it. You'll see results within a day.

This is for an actual sore. If the problem is chafing, I would treat with Desitin.

Many of the other products being mentioned are great for preventive measures, but will have a limited effect on the current problem. The assos cream is great, but pricey. Butt butter works ok. Personally I like Bag Balm -- cheap and very effective.

My $0.02 from many years of riding.

Found Butt Paste at Walgreen's. I'll let you know if  it  "wiped out" the problem. (Sorry, couldn't resist).

The old "perineum"...the OFFICIAL name of that region. I had some heavy duty soreness problems during my first two months of training and then finally got some tri-shorts (I was going "unpadded" before) and that helped, but I also tweaked the seat angle and positioning a bit to find a good spot. If the problem isn't solved by the "Butt Butter", give that a shot.

Boudreaux's Butt Paste is awesome.  They carry it at Wal-Mart now, so you can buy it pretty much anywhere.  A little goes a long way, and it is water proof so you can put it on before a tri and it will stay on during the swim and keep you nice and comfy for your long bike!
