Does anyone know which schools on the north side of Atlanta allow people to use their tracks?

Not sure of any place in particular, but i would be inclined to say that any public school would be open to using the track (unless kids are working on it first). I say our tax dollars paid for it, so I sure as hell better be able to use it

Ugh this is a search I am always on.  All the schools started back and they are really strict about their tracks.  I am going to have to do my speedwork at Columns, or go use the gravel track in Piedmont Park, it is 800m for one lap I believe.

Alpharetta High School is pretty cool about early-AM track WO's; know several guys who do their speed work there.

To start off with, you do not need any speed work.   However, Nicholson Park next to Nicholson Elementary school has a 400 meter track.  The only thing is that it is not completely flat.  It is an asphalt track and it is not a perfect oval.  It is open all the time and they do not use if for track as far as I can tell.  I think it is basically for the public.  It is on Shallowford Road probably about 8 miles from your house.

Centennial High School (Holcomb Bridge and Scott Road (which is right across Holcomb Bridge from Eves) allows it.  I've even run there when they were getting a JV game started.  Mornings are better though this time of year.  I know the masters swim coach from LTF Alpha goes there every Friday morning and has been for over a year.  I went a couple of weeks ago at that time and no problem.  If you go let me know so I can tell you best place to park.

You'd really think it'd be any public school track but I've found that they are gated off when not in use by the school because they typically surround the all important football field.

Doug - I've been to Alpharetta High after work a few times without any issues.  I've also run at a handful of the Gwinnett school tracks too.  Given the time I get off work I usually end up running DURING football practice.  You would think that this would be a no-no but a lot of the parents are there watching practice and use the track to get their own workouts in.  There are usually a handful of people walking and a few jogging during this time.

Several people in my neighborhood run on the track at Elkins Pointe Middle School.  It is right by Hembree Park.

Never went but I remember my HS track was pretty much always open to anyone who wanted to use it unless a specific pay school function was going on there like a football game or just a track meet which was not pay. If it was practice or even middle of the school day and kids were there or gym it was open for anyone to use.

Like someone said your tax dollars paid for it..

I understand the sentiment but it really isn't the case that because taxes paid for the track, it should remain open to the public. Each school has rules and policies regarding its use. Most notably, schools often have strict trespassing policies to prevent people from entering the school. You wouldn't want someone entering a classroom because s/he enjoys Shakespeare and feels the his/her taxes are paying for the lights to be on, the teacher's salary, the desks and text books.

This is no different than public parks.  They are open during certain hours of the day.  Closed for others.  And yes, you can get cited with trespassing on public property.

If in question, contact the school and ask them if there are common hours.  Or if they would consider it.

I wasn't stating this is why it must be open I was explaining why most are open... I've personally never heard of a HS track being closed to outside use unless it was in use by the school at that time.

Campbell Middle on Atlanta Road, maybe 4 miles down from the 285 exit. People go out there all the time, cant go during school hours of course, but i've been many times on the weekends and its always open. Smyrna community center also has an indoor track that is free to residents, anything like that up by you?
