Subject: My new cramps
I started a new job on Thursday that requires me to stand for 7+ hours a day, I also started do some tempo work this week. I had to give up a spinning session yesterday due to cramps in my calves and on my ride today I had to work through a pretty good one. Also of note, with the new job I am not taking any breaks or food for the entire period. So it seems to me that any one these three things could be causing my calf cramps, any thoughts on the cause or how to handle them?

Quit your new job?

Kidding....

I guess make sure you are getting enough electrolytes and calcium, and water, stretch lots, and work through it.  FWIW I get them when I up my intensity too.   Eventually my body adjusts to the new demands.

Are you drinking lots of water/gatorade while you are on your feet? Sweating more?

Without knowing anything about your job, nor posessing a medical degree, I'd suggest making sure you are taking the various -ium (calcium, magnesium, potassium) supplements and staying hydrated. Don't forget to salt your food. Good luck.

You may pay $$$ for a pair of running shoes that you use 1-3 hours 3-5 times weekly; how much attention do you pay to the shoes you spend over 40 hours/week in?

I had bad shinsplints until I invested in better work gear; just a thought.

If you are just "standing" then see if you can get a foam mat for the cushioning. I use one when I have to string tennis racquets. It is a great investment.

I am in agreement with everyone. Invest in some good shoes, make sure you are properly hydrated with water and electrolytes....but fruit esp. oranages and bananas will do the trick. You need to take a few minutes to ingest something. You won't do it on a 2 hour ride...why subject yourself to that for 7+ hours. A last thing that may help, is to try and get a floor mat to stand on. Cashiers and greeters at Walmart stand on them to prevent work realted injury.

Todd,

I'm in HR management - is this job for real? 7 hours, no breaks, no food??? It may be counter productive to your choice of a healthy lifestyle through sports etc.

snoopy, after trying endurolytes last year I have never had another cramp. My job can be similiar to yours at times and a couple of endurolytes before training makes a world of difference. My first tri was almost a DNF due to cramps and I have never been close to that bad since I started taking endurolytes. They have really worked amazingly well for me.

I work on a trade in one of the pits an exchange here in Chicago. So yes it is for real. The endurolytes might be a good idea, thanks.
