Subject: Good places to swim in Durham?
I am sick of the Durham Downtown YMCA. The pool is closed too much, and they closed the other pool site so people could use Durham [sic], they poured cement in the Jacuzzi, and most of the lanes are taken by kids taking splashing lessons when I go. I'm breaking up with the YMCA.

I live in North Durham (off Roxboro). Any suggestions? The aquatic center in Cary is bloody amazing, would be perfect, but it is just too far away for me.

Options I'm considering, from least cool to awesome:
1. Duke
I've done that, their pools also are inconsistent hours and close during school holidays which is very annoying. Up side is there are tons of other facilities (which I frankly will basically never use).

2. Edison Aquatic Center in Durham
Pros and cons: very good hours, close to my house (like five minutes), but not cheap, about 3.50 per visit, and only a pool no other facilities.

3. DAMA (Durham area masters Aquatics) has a triathlon group that meets Tuesday and Thursday (site: http://www.dama.nseg.netdanger the site links don't work in firefox BOO).
That's a bit intimidating for me, as they swim for like an hour and a half and my shoulders can't take such a beating. I'm a BOP sprint tri person training for an Oly next April. I'd love to make some Tri friends at a masters group, but don't want to slow everyone down, be that guy. It is further from my house so I'd be less likely to go, but not all that far (like 15 minutes from work). Also, I think the 30 bucks a month only qualifies me for the classes rather than general facility use. I don't want to have to join two gyms and spend 60 bucks a month.

Any other suggestions? I am leaning toward the DAMA option. Is anyone here familiar with DAMA? Am I missing anything?

Hey. I just posted this in another thread. It gives you a few more (cheap) options. Personally I don't mind a no-frills pool. I just go swim. The IR Holmes pool is almost never crowded. I have shared a lane once in about 2 years!
There are several Durham community pools. They are not fancy by any means but a lot of triathletes use them (costs a little over a dollar a swim so can't beat that!!). I work in Research Triangle Park and swim at the IR Holmes pool. Its about 5 mins from where I work . You know about DAMA- it is meant to be a good workout but I have never swum with them. http://www.durhamnc.gov/departments/parks/aquatics.cfm

At DAMA you can swim at your own pace.  If you want to improve and you don't mind putting in the work, DAMA is the best thing to do in the area.

Thanks for the links. So it is down to 2 and 3 in my list, and if I can get off work in time, I will try DAMA tonight. If you go, I'll be the new guy who swims slower than you. The registration and such online seems strange and not well explained (what exactly am I signing up for?), and this stopped me before. I really need something now though so must do it! If not tonight, then next week.

You just show up with $5 to get in the door.  Leave the forms and registration for later.  If you like it, then register out of good faith.

There's also the Hillsborough Sportsplex. Maybe that's not too far if you go 70 west??? They have a lap pool with 10 lanes. Cost is $5 at the door, or you can buy a 20 visit pass for $60.

I swam there for a year while we had no public pools in Chapel Hill. Now we have two. The two Chapel Hill pools are also just $5 for admission, or $3 if you live in Orange County. One is just off I-40 at I-86. The other is near University mall.

Make sure you call before you go there. Their website sucks, so it's hard to find out when swim teams are hogging the pool. I always used to just call!

Hmm, that's a pain. Well I'll try that place last then. I tend to procrastinate and make excuses anyway, so I will want a place with as few excuse possibilities as I can find

Even when swim teams are there, they have several lanes open for lap swimming so it's not too bad.  They also have a lot of other great equipment.

I tried to find the DAMA masters class last Thursday, got lost and ended up at South Point mall. Yes, I got that lost.

I got confused as it said take a right off 147 South onto Alston, then a left on Alston. Wait, I was already on Alston where the hell am I?  THen once I found out where Alston split off from Alston/55, I still coudn't find it. I did see NC state but think I ended up back on the 55 in the wrong direction, got on the 40 and ended up at South Point and enjoyed some ribs at PF Changs.

I'm printing up a map now instead of directions, which should be a better way to find it.

Man how frustrating was that? Maybe next time I'll also bring a phone number of the place
