Don't expect to get rich off the prize money alone. The Kona purse went up to $100,000 and it still isn't very much. I assume the Pros make most their money from sponsors because I I don't see how they could live off prize money. My hats off to the Pros. I've attached a screenshot of the Kona purse. The M/F winners get $100,000, 2nd gets $30,000, 3rd gets $20,000 and goes down to $5,000 for 10th place.

I have a couple of friends who are pro.  The one who just turned pro 2 years ago still lives a pretty Spartan life.

The other has a very successful coaching business and a few good sponsorships.  Not much money to be made as a pro triathlete.  It has to be a labor of love.

Triathlon has grew significantly in the past couple of years.  As it keeps growing.....more and more companies will throw money at sponsorships.

NOTE, bike manufacturers are starting to advertise their bikes with their favorite tri-athlete, some on their front page...IE cannondale.

IE cannondale - Chrissie, Fuli - Mathew Reed, and few others.

How high would a young pro triathlete have to go to at least pay travel and living expenses? top five with times under 9-10 hours for full IM?

Different IMs have different prize purses. Some IMs the winners only make $10K.

Compare prize purse for pros at Kona 'the world championship' so says WTC and winner makes $100K, not much compared to other sports and world championship.

Here is a link to the overall pro purse of the WTC races, scroll to the bottom to see.

Some IM's the winner only makes $5K and what usually takes 2-3 months to receive. $10K is a lot for WTC to pay out.

You can honestly say that triathletes do this sport for the love of it and not the money. All the money is in ITU, heck Hy-Vee is this weekend, it pays 30 deep and very few triathletes attempt to even race this.

The best money per mile is in short course same, or better prize payouts then Ironmans, yet it seems most steer toward IM.

I would not touch Ironman if I was amount aspiring Pro. I would be looking to get on the ITU World Cup/WTS, most countries support draft legal with national coaches, subsidized travel and living allowences once you are above a certain level. Long Course racing does nt have this, long course pros are basically free agents and many work part time jobs to make ends meet.
