Total Time = 3h 02m
Overall Rank = 130/489
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 14/57
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30, went down to the lobby for breakfast, Leanne joined us. Had a bagel with honey, 1/2 a bannana and some coffee.
Event warmup:

Rode just enough to make sure I was in the right gear, swam just a bit
Swim
  • 29m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Turns out the swim was long, my wife said I was 12th out of the water in my wave, so I figured that at least some of those had to be clydesdales, wrong! I had a clean swim, couple of bumps but I tried to draft a little bit. They had a buoy tied to a dock at the finish which kinda put me off course a little bit, I was aiming for that instead of the wavy man.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, good swim for me.
Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

Average T1, had a little trouble getting my helmet on, and my spot was in sand so I tried to get some off before I put my shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 31m 48s
  • 30 miles
  • 19.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Tough bike course, it seemed to have way more uphill parts than downhill parts. Manadged not to get passed till the last 5 miles, but then got passed by a few people in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

More hill work.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Good T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 57m 44s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

My worst run ever at Pinehurst! I'm not really sure what happened, I had a pretty conservative plan, hold 8:30's. The wheels came off at mile 3, I could not catch my breath, even walking. Maybe having the run course reversed so that you started right off on the hills? Whatever it was it was not pretty, walked alot, never could seem to catch my breath, felt dizzy and vision was blurry. I could not even get myself to run the last mile, just had nothing.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not enough run mileage leading up to this race?
Post race
Warm down:

Went and stood in the lake, felt like crap.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The run killed me, mentally and physically.

Event comments:

I neede a good race to have any chance of moving up, I was 6th going into it and I doubt that this finish helped me at all.
Not to be picky, but not sure if I will do this race again, it's not an olympic distance so there is nothing to compare it to, and none of the distances for this race were on, the swim was long, the run was long and the bike was 30 miles instead of 26.

You had a nice result despite the walking1 Congrats. I had the same problem breathing. The air during the run felt like soup.

nice job on the finish! I agree that the distances weer slightly off for a true International Olympic Distance, but as with many sprints, the distances will vary some.

This course whooped me, but I liked watching the competition and being involved with them
I hope to see you back next year..

Way to go Nick! I was wondering how that new run was going to be. I also remembered it being hilly at the end and now that's the beginning. Good job on the finish. I've been there with the dizzy at the end!

Nice job. X100 on the suffering on the run. Seems like we all had a hard time catching our breath on that run. I think it was in part due to the route starting immediately with hills. Last year you had a half mile or so to catch your breath and then you could ease into the hills. This year it was the big hills up first. And that soupy air. Every report I read has someone commenting on the toughness on the run. Makes me feel better about my sucky run knowing that I was not the only one puzzled at how hard it felt! Anyway, good race. These tough ones make the easy ones easier :-)
