Hi Everyone:

At 39, I am about to enter my first triathlon (July 4). I will be entering the North Bay (ON) Triathlon, which is a 1 Km Swim/32 Km Bike/8 Km Run.

With only 14 weeks to go, I am getting a little nervous that have not found a training program to follow. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Of note, my 15-year-old son will be racing his first tri as well. My goal is to beat him by at least two minutes, which I hope, is not too ambitious, but I do think I can take him.

Any tips on training would also be greatly appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from everyone.

Have a good one (or should I say three).

Steve B = ;-)

Hey Steve, welcome to the sport, and to the community here too! Sorry I can't recommend a training program, for myself I sorta fly by the seat of my pants, so to speak. I like to mix up my training, building endurance and increasing distances so I'm at least covering the distance of each event before a race comes. That way I seem to learn pacing, and how long I can expect it to take to do a specific discipline. You should have plenty of time to build to that event in 14 weeks. It'll help if you are reasonably fit to start with and not beginning from ground zero as an athlete.

go here http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Programs/16wkOlympic2x.htm and start at week 3 and:

for the swim u can knock off a 30% of the time, the bike 20% and the run 20% - if my calculations are correct.

if your new, go easy, listen to your body - rest is very important, if u cant finish the program then NO PROBLEM, u can certainly walk part of the run.  dont wanna injure yourself early in your career.  and if you cant start at week 3, go back more and where u end up by race day is where u will end up.  u wanna finish safely.

great luck!

Hey Steve, welcome.

Best advice - avoid injury.  Some days will seem way to easy and you want to go and do more and more and more and pretty soon you have a limp and training goes down hill and then you are three minutes behind your son at the end of the race!  Get on a plan and trust the plan.  Most importantly, have fun!  Sounds like you have a partner already, so enjoy it - that's the most important part of this!

Hey Steve. Welcome and good luck. I am a newbie and my first tri is not until June 13th. i am doing a 12 week training that I found on the New York Triathalon Club site. nytc.org. I cant speak for the results because I havent been through it yet but it gives me definitive daily and weekly goals so I feel I am on the right track. My actual tri is exactly 1/2 the distances of the training so I simply divided by 2.

I find this site very helpful and check in daily. I also like using the training logs.

Good Luck

Hey Steve - Welcome! Canadians make great triathletes - sent you a note about my own time up North. [Hey - wouldn't a 10K snowshoe event in place of the run give us an edge?] Ditto on the injury prevention - listening to your body stuff. Your goals are great - choosing the Oly is challenging, but doable. Much good luck.
