Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:20 and out the door at 4:30. PB on ww beagle nanner coffee and water. Everything was already loaded.
Event warmup:

I stretched the legs and arms light jog. I wasworried about the wetsuit and making sure I had pulled it up enough to get some slack in the shoulders I got it on early. Had to pee and took the top down. Thought about 10 min before the start I should pee again decided against it. Was too worried about tightness in the suit. Bad move

Comments:

My shoulders we done by the first turn bouy 1/3 of the way in. After that I was short stroking it and a leisurely pace. I never got a good draft. As the people that I wanted to draft off I could only hang with for a bit then shoulders denied it. Good thing was it was not a hard swim and I came out fresh and felt real good. Bad thing I was slow.
What would you do differently?:

Get a suit that fits or sleeveless next year. I borrowed this one so it was the best I could do on a free budget.

Comments:

It was a long run to my bike. I keep a good pace to the bike. Got the top of the suit pulled down quick and had my cap and goggles in the sleeve. Suit came off fast and I stuffed it in the bag. Took off with bike and ran and jumped on my bike. I was 2 nd fastest in my ag.
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

Oh the fun. Slight head wind and wet made for a slow ride. Plus I got off the bike twice. I didn't even get to the damn and I got hit by a guy who crashed. I took a wide turnand he tried to take a fast sharp turn on the wet road and down he went. He slide out and into me. His front tire hit my back but I stayed up. Later I realized he hit my derailer. On the last part of the big hill at mi 7 ish I was going to drop 2 gears and stand and climb over. I shifted and stood and the chain spun freely. I locked my knee and lost all forward motion. Unclipped fast and walked the bike to the top. The rest of the day the 2nd and 3rd easiest gears were no where to be found. I had to pee so bad it hurt to be in aero. I was distracted about trying find a place to pee and not biking to well. I tried to let it go on the bike but couldn't do it. Mile 18 I finally pulled over and found a bush. I stopped by a guy I met a few weeks ago just by chance. His chain was jacked. Not sure if he finished. The restof the bike went well.
What would you do differently?:

Not get hit. Pee before the swim.
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

No flying dismount like normal. Knee was hurting and didn't want to test it. I hate running in bike shoes. It was pretty slow.
Run
  • 1h 03m 48s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

I set a goal of 1:06. I really didn't think I would run that. I got out and the knee felt tolerable. The first half is slightly uphill on the out and back course. So I tried to hold 10:30. I made the turn around at 35 min. It was slightly more than halfway. But my goal time was looking good. I felt pretty good and picked it up a little on the way back. Evondo gave me some great prerace advice. Keep the first half under control then pushed it from there. This was my first ever 10k run in a race and I am a slow runner. I did walk for about 10 seconds at 4 of the aid stations to drink.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep training and get faster for the next one.
Post race
Warm down:

Saw the wife at the end. Got a finishing kiss from here. Ate a cookie and iced the knee.

Event comments:

I loved the race. I will do it next year. Hope Dallas works on the roads more though. Coach Kristen has been a great help to me on the swim even though it really didn't show. I saw so many Texas Triple Threat people during the race it was great.

Great job in some tough conditions. Staying up after getting hit and not going down when your gears gave out was huge! Nice job beating your run goal. Congrats on a great race.
