Subject: Stinky clothes
Hi:

I'm sure this has probably been discussed before but my neck and head hurt (ok poor excuse for not searching.)

Anyway, my gym workout clothes really smell.  I cannot get the smell out from the armpits.  I have a lot of gym clothes.  Anyway, I have tried Shout, Arm and Hammer combined with Tide, etc.  Does anyone have any other solutions for me?  I do not want to buy a whole lot of clothes. I can't afford it.

By the way, as for soaking, I live in an apartment and must tote my clothes to the laundromat - I cannot let them sit in the washer at the laundromat and really do not have time to be soaking them in my tub. Is there another much easier and time saving solution for someone who 1) works full time, 2) goes to school part time, and 3) works out for tris?

Thanks!

Have you tried Febreze in the laundry?  Or get a bucket and soak the clothes in your apartment in the bucket before taking them to the laundry?

I noticed the other day that Dicks Sporting goods sell a type of detergent for work out clothing. I dont know if you have one in your area or not, it would be worth checking into.

I hand wash mine in the sink right after I finish working out.  I still wash them in the washer before I wear them again, but I feel like this initial quick rinse helps get the funk out.  And I buy mostly inexpensive workout tops from Target so I don't feel as bad if they only last a season.  (And actually the target Champion sports bras are my favorite.  I like them better than those that cost twice as much).

Hi:

I haven't tried Febreze, but I guess I could.  I am sick of buying products, but it is a thought. :-)  I am not up for the soaking clothes thing because I do not like leaving standing water in my apt (I live in NYC - leaving standing water is like inviting unwelcome "guests" *cough*)

Thanks! :-)

Yours truly,

Thanks for writing me! Yes, I buy the cheap Target clothes too, but I am on a tight budget, so even then I cannot buy more (even though I tend to buy them on clearance.)  :-)

I wish I could do the quick rinse.  I gym early in the morning pre-work and when I come home I am basically taking the clothes out (so that they don't stink up my gym bag), throwing them in hamper, so that I can RUSH RUSH RUSH out to work.  Basically, I come home and am in and out of the house in five minutes or less. (I shower at the gym.)

Thanks for suggestion though!

Hi!

Thanks so much for the link.  I looked up this detergent and read the testimonials.  I see that it is sold in my tri store here in Manhattan (and their rival tri store which is more expensive - bleah.)

Anyway, I plan to check them out on Friday hopefully and pick up the stuff.  I have an account at the tri store. *cough*  *hide* *blush*

Geesh, who knew I would ever have an accout at a tri store... sigh.  I can't believe I never saw the laundry detergent.  Probably too busy looking at shoes and heart rate monitors .....

Thanks so much!

Another vote for Win detergent.  If the clothes have been sitting around for a few days I add a half cup of white vinegar with the Win detergent.  I hang them up to dry.

Instead of throwing them in the hamper, hang them up, or throw them over a chair so they can dry. Leaving them balled up while sweaty/wet is 90% of your problem.

you might try some of the products for getting stink out of wetsuits, like "Sink the Stink" and "MiraZyme" by McNett.

Have you tried Sportwash? I usually dump a cap of that along with a cap of regular detergent....seems to do the job for me.

I use a Win/Reg detergent mix and use an extra rinse on the wash cycle, x2 on drying clothes,x2 on soaking in tub. Sounds like you have bacteria trapped in the microfibers of your clothes, easy fix, just soak overnight in tub or sink with Win! Most sporting goods stores will carry Sportwash or Win, you may even find it at Target or Walmart. Technical fabrics are tightly weaved and bacteria gets trapped in the fibers, they are easy to clean with the right stuff.

Heres the trick.

Jump in the shower with your clothes (or just toss them in the tub).  After a quick "fresh water rinse" ring them out and then hang on the hamper to dry.  Then when you get home from work they are dry and in the hamper until you get a chance to get to laundromat.  SHould help...I do this often when my gear is soaked in sweat.  Drenched in sweat and thrown in the hamper just sounds like a bacteria factory.

Yes!

I use this for my cloth bikrams yoga mat.  I would sweat gallons on it every class and wash it all the time and it still held on to the smell.  The instructor suggested vinager, and it does the trick.

If I had a problem with my clothes, I would try this first before spending money on fancy detergents.

X2 on taking shower with clothes on.  I rinse off, and let clothes dry out in shower.  Put in hamper next day until I do wash.  I sweat more than anyone I know and don't have problem with stinky clothes.

HOT WATER !  i always wash my stuff with the whites in hot water( I also do the drying thing while sweatty).  The other day my daughter picked up some stuff of mine and washed it with colors (cold water) and hung dry them as usual for my stuff.  When I picked them up, I imediately noticed the stench,  I had to wash them again

Hot water is the way to go.  I have heard that it deteriorates the materials but I have not noticed that at all
