Subject: Recomendations for a good Men's Multi Vitamin?
I am using GNC Mega Men right now. They make a Mega Men Sport which I think is the same as the regular but contains some amino acids. I've never used that, becasue i feel I get enough protein from my diet and through supplements. One big plus is that they are pretty cheap in relation to other companies, and easy to find.

Ive also tried  "Source of Life" Mens Multi which is a little more expensive, but in independant tests always shows to have 100% + pf the advertised vitamins/minerals.

I am just a little skeptical of GNC, since they also carry so much diet drugs, and "get ripped now" type lifting supplements.

Any suggestions. Anyone think my comments are rational/irrational? If so I'd lbe interested to know why.

Thanks!

I take Centrum Performance which I get from my local grocery store.  Also interested in others' opinions on this.

My inexpert opinion is that any multi-vitamin would be fine.  Go for the cheapest if that's what you're leaning toward.  The more expensive ones are likely just a bunch of marketing hype.  If you have a balanced diet you probably don't even need a multi-vitamin, but it doesn't hurt to take one just in case.  I take one, but have no clue which brand it is....

Everything that I read states that you should take a normal multi-.

Absorption is usually the limiting factor, not quality or the amount of nutrients in the pill.

If you are worried about absorbing enough, you should take less each time - more often - with meals.

Too long ago for me to cite the source.

A lot of people drop serious $$ for yellow, stinky urine.

for what it's worth, I asked my RD about this and she said the plain old multivits were fine.  I take the generic Centrum.  However, I also supplement with Vitamin D and fish oil caps.

After a lot of research and study on this topic, I personally take USANA vitamins. I don't like their business model, but I like what they do with their formulations. Not all vitamins are equal...IMO. I add a little extra lipoic acid and D3.

I've tried all sorts of kinds and am now using the generic grocery store multi.  If you compare those with the mens there is very little difference.  Go with the best price.  Also, make sure you get ones without IRON!  Most men don't need iron and it can be dangerous in high levels.  When I get my new bottle I go through and break them all in half then take one half in the morning and one at night.  It is easier on the stomach and I believe the body will absorb more since it is not trying to absorb it all in one sitting.  Just my 2 cents!

I take USANA also.  When I did my research I found that the whole Pharmaceutical Manfactuing makes sense.  When I did some home testing on GNC & other product, they wouldn't break down, there is no guarantee of potency, they don't have to.

I don't promote the business, but I did sign up as a distributor so I could buy their stuff wholesale..

I think the bigger question is what vitamins and minerals do we really need as athletes and to support our diets, some brands have bigger spectrums than others. Maybe Ill post up the question to BT Coaches.

Based on common research..Centrum and many other cheap mult's use  synthetic materials, including binders and additives used to make the vitamin that your body simply can't break down..in addition the sources that these companies use are of low grade (imported from china, etc) and filled with toxins...

In reference to toxins, to which chemical compounds are you referring?

So basically it's just something that you "know"? Random website found on a Google search aren't good evidence.

#1 - This website is selling something. Not the most reliable source of objective information. Personally, I have more respect for people that say, "I like to stick things in my rectum." than the ones that say, "I have a medical need to stick things in my rectum to eliminate 'toxins'."

ULTIMATE COLON CLEANSE!

#2 - The bibliography.

Alade SL ; Brown RE ; Paquet A Jr. Polysorbate 80 and E-Ferol toxicity. Pediatrics 1986 Apr;77(4):593-7.

A 24 YEAR-OLD STUDY ON A PARTICULAR CLINICAL IV USAGE IN LOW BIRTH WEIGHT NEONATES IN NICU. NO RELEVANCE.

Blecher, Louis. Excipients - The Important Components. Pharmaceutical Processing Jan 95, page 6.

NOT PEER REVIEWED RESEARCH. MORE OF A "HANDBOOK" NO EVIDENCE THAT ONE VITAMIN IS OR IS NOT FOLLOWING APPROPRIATE GUIDELINES.

Bove KE et al. Vasculopathic hepatotoxicity associated with E-Ferol syndrome in low-birth-weight infants. JAMA 1985 Nov 1;254(17):2422-30.

ANOTHER 25 YEAR OLD STUDY ON IV VITAMIN E ADMINISTER TO LOW BIRTH WEIGHT INFANTS.

Czap, Al. IS YOUR POLYPLASDONE KOLLIDON WITH YOUR SO LKA-FLOC? Townsend Letter for Doctors, November 1984/Issue No. 21.

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE MAGAZINE. NOT PEER REVIEWED RESEARCH.

Green, Dr. Keith. Detergent Penetration Into Young and Adult Eyes. Department of Opthamology, Medical College of GA, Augusta, GA.

ACTUALLY THE TITLE IS "Detergent Penetration Into Young and Adult Rabbit Eyes - Comparative Pharmacokinetics" (1987)... 26 YEAR OLD REPORT THAT CONCLUDES 16-Carbon-CHain detergents to more damage than 12-Carbon Chain Detergents. No discussion on vitamins.

Horrobin, David. Journal of Holistic Medicine, vol.3, no.2, Fall/Winter 1981, p. 132. Okhamafe AO ; York P.

I cannot find this article through UCLA's database. Is this the same David Harrobin with legal problems for his illegal supplement sales?

Thermal characterization of drug/polymer and excipient/polymer interactions in some film coating formulation. J Pharm Pharmacol 1989 Jan;41(1):1-6.

I could only get the abstract, and I cannot form an opinion on the abstract alone. It does not appear to be remotely close to the claims.

Based on this, I recommend...

1. If you are a low-birthweight neonate in intensive care, don't time travel to the 1980's to receive IV administrations of Vitamin E. You probably should not take adult centrum orally either. Although, the pill may be wider than your esophogus.

2. If you a rabbit, don't put 16-carbon-chain detergents in your eye. Actually, don't put 12-C detergents in either. For that matter, don't put Multi-Vitamins in your eyes.

3. If you sell questionable supplements, you can cite a guy who has had over a millions dollars of product siezed by the FDA  (WHO RARELY SIEZES SUPPLEMENTS!) and most people will not even question that fact!

4.  If one of my students wrote an essay like the work cited, I would find a way to give them more than one F.

 - Half of the articles are not citable as viable research.

 - Format could not even be consistent. Titles were omitted or changed.

 - They do nothing to support the assertions or conclusions made. (The presence of a compound in Vitamin "A" and no in  Vitamin "B". The evidence that this compound is dangerous in the manner and dosage present.)

 - They are not contemporary to the current body of reproducible research.

ETA: I will not "LMFAO". As an educator, I died a little inside writing this post... The fact that I felt the need to to show that this is not "commonly known info" or "common research" makes me wonder how soon our failure in basic science education will make our economy submissive to China or India.

There was a single response that wasn't remotely helpful or constructive, so it's now gone.

Well, I am still willing to consider some citations for the assertions made--- just with the understand that I will make a critical review of the original works cited.

To which I defer to my original statements/questions.

I also take Usana Essentials.  It satisfied the needs of vitamins and tremendously boosted my intake of antioxidants.  Also, as stated earlier in the thread they stick to GMP standards which I found to be important after doing research.

The problem with most vitamins is that anyone can start a vitamin company.  I could start one tomorrow if I wanted.  There are plenty of companies that produce them and then they are sold to anyone who wants to put a label on them and market them.  The problem is that even though they contain the stated ingredients, they also use fillers and don't disintegrate in the stomach properly so chances are your body will see very little of the actual vitamins if any.

I freebase my vitamins, seems like the best way to make sure I absorb everything.

But seriously, I just use the Target brand Men's vitamins mostly due to the cost. I also am really curious if there is any evidence to the more expensive vitamins actually being better for you.
