Subject: Best "Clydesdale Friendly" Half Ironman Triathlons?
Let's see if we can get a list of Half Ironman Triathlons that have fairly flat Bike/Run courses and generous cut-off times for those "Clydesdales" considering first time at this distance.

I've come up with Redman (Oklahoma City), Soma (Tempe, AZ), White Lake (North Carolina), and Lonestar (Corpus Christi) as good first time "Clydesdale Friendly" Half Ironmans.  Any thoughts?  Any others to consider?

I plan on doing a half ironman in 2010.  In 2009 I did an OLY and a Sprint and I enjoyed the OLY a lot more.  Right now, I am trying to decide between doing Cannonman in PA and Savageman in Maryland.

I'm leaning toward Savageman and it's kind of funny since one of the main reasons is that I want to take a shot at the Westernport wall. http://www.savagemantri.org/Westernport_Wall.html

I'm a clyde and I'm slow on hills but I have yet to find one that I can't power through.  At that link there are a lot of pics of people hitting the ground on that beast. It's not only steep; it appears to have a difficult surface.

I did my first Half Iron in Napa California (Napa Vintage by Envirosports) last May and was eaten alive by the steep hills.  Had to dismount the bike and walk many times on steep climbs, mainly because I'm Super Clyde heavy.  Their "generous cutoff times" allowed me to finish, but my first experience could have been alot better had I investigated the hill steepness better.

I came up with another one that could be "Clydesdale Friendly" and that is the Muncie Endurathon.  From what I'm reading, the bike is pretty flat, but the run could be trouble.

The Whirlpool Steelhead in MI one is supposed to be fairly flat, but I haven't done it to confirm.

You may want to consider the HIM at Augusta, GA. I am a clydesdale and did it this year. The bike is flat with a few rolloing hills in the middle but nothing very serious. The run is very flat. Good course. Other then being a warm and humid it was a good one to do
By the way the swim is great also. It is a point to point with the current.

I'm pretty sure The Spirit of Racine in Racine, WI is a fairly flat bike/run course. I was signed up for it this year, but unfortunately had to bail out a month prior due to ongoing injuries that prevented me from building a sufficient running base. Don't know whether it has generous cut-off times, however...but it does have a Clydesdale/Athena division.

LoneStar in Galveston. The only hill should be the causeway leaving the island.

What about this one at Cedar Point in Ohio?  It's along the lake so it may be flat.  I'm only speculating though.  LINK

Definitely add Augusta Half to the list. The swim is great, you can almost float downstream and knock out the swim in an hour.

The bike is flat.  The 40 miles in I was disappointed in the hills, or lack thereof.

The run is pancake flat and surrounded by fans.

Great venue. I am doing it again next year.

I have to agree on the Augusta HIM. I did it last month and found it to be a really good "first". I am a very slow swimmer and was worried about the cut times. In the pool I average 2:15 per 100yds and did the swim at Augusta in 31 mins. The bike had very gentle rolling hills... so if you aren't too good you can hit a lower gear and still get up them. The run was super flat.

I plan to do New Orleans in April. I went to school down there and know the area well. The bike and run will have 0% grade.

Yes, Sandusky is flat, but swimming in Lake Erie will be a challenge.

Is that from it being cold, having currents, being choppy?  I've never swam in it so I don't know.  This looked like a great venue and it's not too far away.  I am looking at places like this so I can match up a summer vacation for the family and oh yeah.. I'm going to do this triathlon on one of those days.  ;-)

hahah no!  I clarified that it was NOT a flat one.  I don't want anyone having a heart attack.  I really want to try that hill.  One thing I noticed during my first tri is that despite being slow, I seemed to be stronger on the steep hills than some of the other guys.  I was staying seated and just churning straight up while they were standing and weaving side to side.  Grante, they were faster than me but I think I'm more of a... well... clydesdale.

FIRMman in Rhode Island.  Patriot in Massachusetts.

LoneStar is flat, but can be very windy.

All the above, though I have heard they are looking into an alternate swim spot, protected by a cove.

Rev 3 will give your family tickets to cedar point to play while you race, and if you have internet for your cell phone, a tracking device so your family willl know when your close to transition to come back and cheer you on.

and stepping over the curb is the total elevation also....  I've done it the 1/4 the last two years, this year I'm doing the half.

I'm also doing savageman,, one of the hardest, hilliest half's out there.   All races are Clyde friendly and if you work on your climbing skills, you get a huge advantage on the downhills..

If you're looking for flat, Spirit of Racine is a flat, fast course. Lake Michigan can be really, REALLY cold.
