Subject: Lifetime Fitness indoor lap pool question

Hey!  It looks like a lot of people work out at Lifetime Fitness for their swim workouts and I have a question.  I've asked at the gym and have gotten two different answers and can't seem to find the answer to my question on Lifetime's website.  Is the indoor lap pool meters or yards?  I believe that the gyms are all pretty standard, so I am going to assume that if your LTF is meters or yards, then likely mine is the same.  Thanks so much!

I have a 75ft rope that I take with me to the pool to measure it.. usually I can tell by my times.. many places will claim to be meters when they are actually yards.... just go to wal-mart.. get a long clothes line and measure it

That what I was told by the multi-Ironman finisher/GM at mine.  I'm thinking he's probably a pretty good resource.

I've never been to yours, but I would be EXTREMELY surprised if it were meters. The overwhelming majority of competitive swimming pools in the U.S. are either 25 yards (short course) or 50 meters (long course). I swim at a LTF in Minnesota, and the pool there is 25 yards.

I swim at 3 different Lifetimes on a fairly regular basis and they are all different.  One is 25 yards, one is 60 feet and the other is something crazy like 23 yards.

At least one of these pools has the distance on the bottom of the "pool rules" sign, showing how many laps there are to a mile.  Check there.

Before I saw all the meters responses, I would have said you could assume it was YARDS.   So, I'm going with "it depends" and you'll have to either measure it or trust what they tell you.

and like another post said - many people say the pools is 25 m without really knowing.

The lifetime fitness pool in columbus (easton) is 25 yards.

That's how our LTF pools are.  The only way to know for certain is to measure.

Most people and employees don't really have a clue!  Go measure it to be safe.  If the depth is marked on the side of the pool in feet, you can bet it is a 25 yard pool.  I'm in Pa, and have probably swam in over 100 pools in this area; I think only 1 was a 25 meter pool.  A couple of 50 meter pools but the large majority are 25 yards.  Some outdoor pools also tend to be 20 yards.

Peolpe like to think they swim in an Olympic size pool even though they don't.

Mike, your reasoning doesn't work for LTF pools.  Our pools are both marked with feet for depth, while both are different in length, at least at the location I'm at in SE Michigan.

Mike - that's a good method.  One would think if they are using american standard measurements for depth they would for length as well.  (unfortunately people do crazy things and rottie is prob right that there are plenty of exceptions.)

As far as I know, all the ones in Atlanta are like this.

I personally train at JC and Alpha and all 4 pools are 25 meters.

True they could do the depth in american standard and the legth in metric, but I have not seen it. With my years as a competitive swimmer I saw a lot of pools and heard a lot of people saying the wrong thing about them(meter vs feet).  I actually have a neightbor with 2 daughters on the swim team that swears the YMCA we all swim at is 25 meters.  In reality it is 25 yards, yet he refuses to believe it because people refer to it as an olympic size pool.  I even offer to go measure it with him, of coarse he refuses to do that too

If anyone is that concerned about what the legnth is just take a 25ft tape measure to the pool and measure it. It only takes a minute and then you'll know.

I'm in Dallas, and I swim at the LTF off Trinity Mills... that one is meters.

I would think it's probably meters.

Do you know your 25 yard 50 time? If so, you could determine if it's meters or yards by that?

I'd bet money that at least half the pools mentioned above that people are certain are 25 meters are in fact 25 yards....

A lot of people think 25 m is very close to 25 yards.
In fact, 25 m = 27.3 yards.

I think it is important to know the actual pool size.  when you swim "1000" in a meter pool, you are swimming ~92 yards more than the "1000" you do in a yard pool.

In this country, most of the measurements are done in English system.  Why would you think it'd be different when measuring a pool?
And for the record, an "Olympic size pool" has to be 50 meter.  A 25-m pool is not an Olympic size.  It may be called a "standard training pool" in the rest of the world.  Not sure about the States.  I have a feeling a "standard pool" in the States refers to the 25 yard pool we found in most YMCAs.

The only place around my area I know for sure to have a 50m pool is in the athletic center in MIT.

I swim at NYSC. I've been told by some employees the pool is 25 meters, and other employees the pool is 25 yards. I gave up trying to find out.  One day I'll bring in a tape measure and find out myself.

You would think they would have this posted at the pool, but from everyone's comments it seems like no one does.

Ironically, for triathletes I wonder if it matters much how long the pool is (25m vs 25y), given that we race in open water which translates very poorly from lap swim time and can monitor our improvement as long as we train regularly in the same pool regardless of length.

Does make it a easier to compare times against other swimmers though, but if a significant proportion of triathletes on this forum also have their pool distances screwy, even that's a wash.

Thats pretty awesome how many people swim at Lifetime.

To be exact, just got off the phone with the GM of my location.  The indoor pool is 25m, outdoor pool is 25yards.  Notice based on stroke count usually for me.  The small little pool I'm not sure about since I didn't ask.

Maybe this fixes everyones issue.

If you only swam one length it wouldn't matter. ~2.5 yards difference.

Of course if you swim one mile in a pool you thought was meters but was really yards - you cut about 175 yds off your work out.

Every thenth time you go to swim you have lost a total of a mile. Short cutting a mile is a big deal. And IM triathltes beter be putting in more swim time then that whioch would REALLY short cut workouts

If I don't know - I assume yards for two reasons - most of them are and if I am going to ere, I should put in extra practice rather than cut corners.

Heard that to many times from managers and other people.  How does he know what it is?  Chances are someone told him and did that person know? The only way you will know for sure is to take a tape measure to the pool and measure it. It could be that the indoor pool is 25yards and the outdoor pool is 20 yards. I don't know why this happens but have see it before.

And yes an Olympic size pool is 50 meters, however many places(this is where some confusion comes from) advertises their 25meter or 25 yard pools as olympic size.

The only Olympic size pool (50 meters) that I know of in the Philadelphia area is at U of Penn. although there may be more.
