Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30 and ate 2 waffles, a banana and some coffee.
Got to Civic center park and took a picture with the BT crew and warmed up with my wife..
Event warmup:

Ran a bit and did some dynamic stretching. line up near the front.

  • 08m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

This race was all about my wife Michele..THis was her first marathon and she had her eye on a BQ time of 3:50..So I wanted to help her get there..I carried a fuel belt with infinite and a water bottle..THe fuel belt drinks were for her and I had the water bottle with infinite..
So we get going at our 8:30 pace and the first 10 miles flew by..Then at mile 18 my wife is having some outside knee pain, we walk a bit and she stretches and decides to take the ibuprophen she brought. Good idea, by mile 20 we were back on pace..Actually we had banked about 4 minute..We walk a bit every so often then at mile 23 I am cramping..I tell her to go on. I walk/ run the last 3 miles as my quads were starting to sieze with 1 mile to go..I got behind early on with my hydration..I did take some endurolytes through the day but I was not going to recover..I was just hoping my wife got in under 3:50..I tried to run in the finish chute and my left quad seized up and I had to limp in..What a lesson to learn not to get behind in your hydration..Michele did indeed get in under 3:50 she was 3:48:02 in her first marathon and BQ to boot..I have only been in this much pain once before and that was IMaz in 06 where I cramped up on the bike and walk/jogged the marathon..It was good day overall..
What would you do differently?:

Our training was very minimal for this race..We had only done 1x18 miles for a long run..I really wanted to get in 2-3 20 milers but we just didn't have the time..For boston we will be better prepared..Lesson to everyone..Even being a 3:03 marathoner in the previous year, one cannot fake this distance! You need to train for it and fuel well..I know this stuff but that is the way it goes sometimes.
Post race
Warm down:

Talked to all the BT crew..Good to see Julia, Trixie, Cathy, Robyn, Susan,Ted, Thomas, Scott, Melanie, Drew, Whiz, Stacie..Hope I didn't miss anyone..Had a few mGD 64's and had to get home..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training and fueling.

Event comments:

Very well organized but I have to say the food choices of some of these races is just plain terrible..bagles and bananas? There needs to be real food. Great course!

Nice, Mark! Congrats to Michelle -- a BQ on her first attempt is awesome! Kudos to you for supporting her along the way. I look forward to seeing you again at Beantown next year, and to meeting your bride. Cheers!

Total bummer that you suffered cramps at the end but happy you accomplished your goal of getting Michelle in with a BQ!

Congrats to Michelle!  I think Denver is harder than people realize too, seems like everyone, even people who've done a bunch of marathons have struggled here.  Great job!

That's awesome you were able to run most of the race with your wife!

This race was well put on, but I agree completely about the finisher food. That was terrible!

Great job MARK!!! Awesome of you to do this one for your wife and thanks for sharing your experience! This info helps so I don't make the same mistake with hydration again... that's probably why I was cramping so bad as well! So cool she made Boston Qualify! She kicked booty for her 1st Mary! You guys must be so proud!
