Subject: Swim, Run or Bike with Head Cold?
I have a head cold, nothing in the chest.  Would like to have some sort of workout at lunch, but don't want to make myself any sicker then I am already.  Any suggestions on which of the three I should do?  Not a huge workout keep in mind, just 40-45 minutes or so.  Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

As long as it's above the neck I will run or bike.  Please don't swim - nothing grosser than swimming in someone else's snot....

I find that a swim clears out the sinuses.   Snot rockets in the gutter to keep it out of the pool, though.

One rule is if sick above the neck, go for it, with moderation. Not so sure about swimming, that could be kind of gross....see both above posts!

I'm in the same boat as you right now, and my Dr. wife says the same as people above: as long as it's in the head, it's OK to work out. I did a great 10 mile run 2 days ago, and my swim yesterday felt good too. So go do what feels best right now.

Get better soon!!

Too funny, I was leaning towards swim until I posted this.  Never thought of the snot aspect of it all.  Thanks for the advice, looks like there's a run in my future

Just be careful... I had a head cold (and a bit of a cough, but not bad) 3 weeks ago, went for a couple of bike rides and a couple of runs during the first 2 weeks. Now I've been home in bed with pneumonia for a week. If it's "only" a head cold, then you should be ok if you take it very easy. Any itchyness in the throat, skip it. Better to miss a couple of runs or rides instead of being completely knocked out for a couple of weeks (maybe up to 4 weeks before I can start training again...)

In the head
go ahead
in the chest
let it rest.

Agreed! Running or cycling is usually fine, but keep the intensity low. Your respiration should be at a conversational pace. If the exercise induces coughing its time to stop.

you SHOULD work out

(avoid the pool - for the snot factor - even though chlorine will kill them all bugs)
