Subject: power & heart rate monitor for bike and run???

Hi,

I’m not too sure how power tap works but I have read that training with power is the best way to improve. I currently use a polar rs 200 heart rate monitor with a pedometer. So on the bike I only have my heart rate to go by and then on the run I’m in good shape as I can monitor my heart rate and pace.

My question is: if I switch to a power tap, it has a heart rate monitor but once I’m off the bike then it’s not going to work with my Polar watch. So short of wearing two heart rate monitors (which is not practical, nor comfortable) what system exists that you can monitor your power and heart rate on the bike and your heart rate and pace on the run?

Thanks

Shaun

I'm in the process of researching and buying a PT, so by no means am I an expert. But it is my understanding that the chest strap that comes with the PT is also Garmin-compatible, so maybe get you a Garmin (I'd recommend the FR305) for the run.

Garmin and PowerTap uses the same heart rate strap (I misplaced my PT strap and used my Edge 305 strap, so I know this for a fact). Just make sure that both HR monitor and PT computer is syncronized with that HR strap though... go into menu and to add it.

As for Polar and PowerTap, this doesn't work at all... I also have a Polar S625X (love the running feature of this HR, but it's getting to be a pain with two straps...) and since this is coded completely differently, it will not work with PT (or Garmin for that matter).

Best advise, if you would like to race with the same strap, use the PT for cycling and a Garmin Forerunner 305 for the run... then you're safe

Powertap works with the Garmin strap so you can use a 305 or 310xt.  Quarq does not ship with a head unit but most of the compatible head units come with a HR strap and could be used for running.  310xt would be a good solution for any ANT+ powermeter.

Since you already have the RS200, you could consider going with Polar's powermeter (CS600X); however it will require that you get the head unit and WIND power sensor.  However, both the CS600 and RS200 will work with the Polar strap that you have.

However, I wouldn't worry about HR with power; I would use RPE along with your wattage to guide your training and racing.
