Mine was rediculously loud and I thought that was normal.  Then I realized that the cat had wedged itself between the trainer and the sofa.  It's much quieter now.

My husband just came home from a business mtg with a new CycleOps fluid trainer.  I haven't even taken it out of the box yet, because he also came home with H1N1 and he is sleeping in the room where we will be using it.  In fact I have never used a trainer.  I am excited to try it out, and I have no idea how loud it will be.  I can report back later.

I bought a Nashbar fluid trainer 11-19-2006 for $89.96 and $13.25 for shipping. I've put about 3,000 miles on it and am very happy with it. Nashbar has an Ascent fluid trainer on sale for $119.99 right now.

I have a Nashbar mag trainer and it's pretty loud, although nothing my ipod can't take care of.  Noise isn't a big issue as it's in my basement....That said if i were to do it again, I'd buy a fluid trainer.

Did you get that Nashbar fluid trainer at their site?  Those cost about $300 now from what I can find on their site.  I see the Ascent fluid their now, has anyone ever tried that one?

I bought it brand new fron the Nashbar site. I pulled it up under my account past purchases and it says it has been discontinued. I think it is their older model.

I have been using my Cyclops fluid for 15 years. It's quiet. In fact the only real noise is that of the tires when I first start riding. A little spit on the tires gets rid of that sound right away. I wouldn't get too hung up on the price. If you are going to use it a lot in the winter as I do, the $ per ride or $ per year is negligible. Best to get a good one. You'll use it more.

I have a related question. . .

I have the Ascent fluid trainer, and it's not too terribly loud. However, I watched some videos of high quality trainers on youtube (KK, Cycleops, etc.) and my cheap trainer seems to behave differently, which makes me think it wasn't a great purchase. Basically, I can never gain momentum. If I stop pedaling, the wheel almost immediately stops. The higher quality trainers seem to coast more, which would more realistically replicate road conditions.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Performance bike has this one for $129, which I have had for four years with no problems: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1028775_-1_58000_20000_58004

I have never used one before.  Is this one pretty easy to set up and take apart?  I would like to get one I can take in my car and set up at my daughter's soccer practice and use while she practices.  (It is too dark to ride at that time of night.)

Just picked up a Bell Motivator Mag off Amazon for 70 bucks. Think that it was worth the 70 bucks no doubt but do I wish that I would have waited and got a fluid! Heck yeah.

How are people scoring nashbar fluid trainers for 150 bucks?  I see them on their website for $300, more for variable resistance versions.  On that front, do you need variable resistance or do you get that by pedaling harder (which is true for my extremely loud wind trainer).

If you mean, do you need a trainer where where one can change the resistance to different levels with some kind of switch, then the answer absolutely not. I would even go as far as saying that you should try to avoid those. When the word progressive resistance is used with trainers, it means that as you increase your speed, the trainer automatically increases the resistance; which is what you're getting with your "extremely loud wind trainer".

The big difference between a wind trainer and a fluid trainer is (except for noise and mechanically how the resistance is created) the powerband, i.e. how linear (or rather exponential) is the increase of resistance in relationship to the speed increase. This is where the likes of CycleOps Fluid2 are very good, the powerband is in essence the same as if you were to ride on the road; a wind trainer usually develops too much resistance at lower speed and insufficient at higher speeds. This being said, you still get the benefit of winer training, whether on a fluid, wind, or magnetic trainer....

I minute to set up (2 to be sure it doesn't collapse on you in public), and they fold reasonably compactly weighing in about 15-20 lbs. Wear really bright spandex cycling  clothing and a helmet to impress the hawt soccer moms!

I have the Cycleops mag trainer and have no issues with it being excessively loud.  I can watch tv with no problems.  Sure I have to turn up the volume a bit but it isn't any louder than when my kids watch tv.  (course my son is hearing impaired but whatever! )

Yes, very easy, just unfold it, put your bike in place, and tighten the handle.

Yes, that's a big part of why the KK "feels" much more realistic... it has a 6.5 lb flywheel. It's ruined other trainers for me.

I pretty much have my heart set on the cyclops fluid 2.  But I keep keep hearing good things about the KK.  Anyone think the KK is a better buy?

Nashbar has a 20% discount right now. The Ascent fluid trainer would be $96.00 plus shipping. That's not to bad for a inexpensive fluid trainer.
