Subject: Tattoo question
I am toying with the idea of getting the mDot (and really, no need to discuss corporate logos as tattoos, Ironman branded versus not, etc.) tattoo after IMCOZ.

I am a prosecutor, and juries like their prosecutors ink free, so I'd have to get it somewhere that couldn't be see in a skirt suit.

I was thinking about the inside of my wrist --- and small, so that my watch will cover it.

Anyone have experience with wrist tattoos?

I don't have a tattoo and the wrist thing sounds kind of scary.  But I wanted to suggest the one place I'd do it.  I think it would be cool on your hip.  It would be seen when you're wearing a swimsuit, but totally easy to cover-up otherwise.  Just a suggestion.

In your case I wouldn't do the wrist. Even with a watch covering it up, a little bit peeks out and everyone's talking. You'd be surprised what people notice.

If you want it showing when you swim only then on your hip.
If you want it showing when you're in a tri suit or shorts, then back of thigh under the leg. I doubt you wear skirts that short to court.

I wouldn't get it on the watch area, it will show just about regardless of the watch and if someone got you a fancy-schmancy watch that was tiny you'd be kinda stuck.

Yes.  I have 3 tattoos, one of which is on my wrist.  It isn't small and wouldn't be completely covered with a watch.  If you go too small, you can lose detail as the tattoo ages.

You'll have to have it uncovered for several weeks while it heals or the ink will leach out.  You may need it touched up, so that will be a few more weeks.

Anything specific you're wondering about?  I'd be happy to answer.

I'm really iffy on the whole thing, and since it's permanent... maybe I should just stick with the jewlery I have so subtely hinted to my husband that I'd like:

he said oh hell no to this one:

priced at $1,655

I have seven and have kept them all hidden under where a short sleeved shirt would cover. Like said earlier about going to small on your wrist you will lose detail etc. over time. I do think the idea of it being on your hip or leg sounds like a better idea than the wrist. If you want to go real crazy you could get it behind your ear... thats if you wear your hair down all the time. I see these more common recently. Its just a thought.

Take a look at white ink tattoos. You can have them a lot more visible than a traditional tattoo and most people won't even realize it's there.

Also, if you wear collared shirts frequently, you can try the nape of the neck. I got mine (not the m-dot) there so that I can cover it up if necessary.

Mine is the #4 with the diamond as the "dot". Small, not obnoxious, but noticable to those who might care.

Most of all a reminder to me.

Don't do the wrist.  It will be so small, yes, you'll know it's there, but people will see it despite efforts to cover it up, and they won't see "IM finisher."  They'll see "wrist tattooer."

Hip, upper thigh, etc.  Of course, we'll have to approve the final version.  with pitcures.

I vote "no" to the wrist tattoo idea, also. Get it somewhere where you can get it big enough that it'll actually be visible when you want it to be visible but where you can cover it completely when you want it covered.

I would see it on your wrist, no question. Watches always slide around a little.

Another thing to consider(no first hand experiance here) if you are planning on children in the future you may not want to put it in an area that would be stretched, such as the hip. I would say on your back/shoulder blade area.

What about on your foot somwhere? Easily covered by shoes or pantyhose.
That's the place I'm considering. I originally wanted to do just below the achilles on my heel, but I've realized the space is pretty darn small. I'm thinking about just the numbers "140.6" so would need a little more horizontal room.

I agree. It hard to cover tats on the wrist no matter what you do.

I have a tattoo on my ankle..easily covered by socks and pantyhose and pants.  But it is somewhere I can enjoy it.   I never see the one on my back unless I twist around in the mirror.

And what do you have against "wrist tattooers"?

Sounds like a good plan.  Being a lawyer myself, I understand your concern.  You know how a jury member could be influenced without having to hear a word you've said.

A couple of reasons I would avoid the foot one.  #1, that is an area that you will have to have uncovered to heal properly...no shoes, no socks, no hose.  Also foot tattoos are reported to fade fast, according to the artist who has done a couple of my tats.  After our first marathon my best friend wanted 26.2 on her foot, but our artist talked her out of it, instead moving it to her ankle.

I think shoulder or shoulderblade would be good choices, for the reasons others have mentioned.

Get the tattoo not the jewelry.  You probably will not be wearing that when you are 90, but when the nurse at the nursing home rolls you over to change the sheets, they will see the tattoo and be like "holy cow she's an Ironman!!".

Bummer,  when and IF I finish and Ironman, I wanted mine just above the arch of my foot.

I don't think it's impossible to be done - I've seen quite a few on the feet - just some things to know about or be prepared for as Zoom Zoom mentioned. (thanks, by the way!).

For me, I really like the idea of putting it on a foot because my feet have been such an integral part of my journey. Not only the physical stuff like biking and running, but symbolically my feet have taken me one step at a time to reach my goals. That kind of stuff.

I have a whole year to decide anyway
