Subject: 9 speed cassette on a 10 speed chain
I'm currently getting my bike ready for a winter on the trainer and I noticed the trainer wheel and cassette I have is a 9 speed.  My bikes current setup is for a 10 speed.  Will using the 9 speed cassette on the trainer cause any damage to the drivetrain of the bike.  I know the shifting could be off slightly, but I'm not to concerned about that as it will on the trainer.  Could I potentially damage the chain or the rear derailleur by using the 9 speed cassette.

It's gonna shift like cr@p.  Why not take 5 minutes and swap cassettes?

I had HORRENDOUS problems all last year due to wrong speed chain/cassette combo. Fix it and fix it now!

I understand your plight - dropping serious change for a 10sp cassette on a trainer wheel may not be the best allocation of your economic resources.

If you have bar end shifters, you might be okay with your 9sp cassette and there might not be a problem provided you change your shifters to friction. If you have brake shifters, you won't be able to shift gears without problems.

If you have bar end shifters, I'd give it a try before I dropped the cash on a 10sp cassette. If it doesn't work, then you have some decisions to make.

I would expect premature wear and tear on the cassette and chain. I don't think it will have much impact in the derailer or front sprockets.

Remember, free advise is worth what you paid for it.

Go to a place like Nashbar or performance and buy a store brand cassette, weight and metal type don't matter so go by price. probably can be had for 25 bucks or so.

you can get a new 10 speed cassette for cheap if you don't care about the weight. why not have components that are designed to shift together? You'll definatley cause premature wear on the other drivetrain parts AND it will s hift like crap, making the trainer no fun to ride and well, they are already no fun to ride.
